Scoliosis: discs and vertebrae. Cobb angle: friend or foe?
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Both vertebral and disc deformity contribute to scoliosis deformity, but the Cobb angle measures both, without distinguishing their relative magnitudes, which are approximately equal. (The disc deformity is greater in the lumbar region than in the thoracic.) Most attention has been given to the vertebral deformity, which apparently develops because of growth disturbance, and some subsequent remodeling. Conversely, discs do not grow in height while adolescent deformity is progressing. It appears from a few studies that progression of scoliosis occurs initially in the discs and subsequently in the vertebrae. Nutritional compromise has been implicated premature disc degeneration on the concave side in scoliosis. Our rat-tail model in which a curvature is imposed along with compression develops a ‘structural’ disc deformity with tissue remodeling after 5 weeks, and we are studying the underlying mechanisms.

Disc and vertebral wedging in patients with progressive scoliosis.
A retrospective longitudinal radiographic study of patients with progressive scoliosis was conducted to determine the relative amount of wedging between vertebrae and discs as a function of progression of the scoliosis curve, cause of the scoliosis, and anatomic curve region. Posteroanterior radiographs of 27 patients with idiopathic scoliosis and of 17 patients with scoliosis associated with c...

Background: Scoliosis is the most common type of spinal deformity. A universal and standard method for evaluating scoliosis is Cobb angle measurement, but several studies have shown that there is intra- and inter- observer variation in measuring cobb angle manually. Objective: Develop a computer- assisted system to decrease operator-dependent errors in Cobb angle measurement. Methods: The spinal ...

STUDY DESIGN Retrospective review of radiographic data. OBJECTIVES This study sought to define interobserver and intraobserver variability to further delineate reliable means by which radiographs of patients with neuromuscular scoliosis can be examined. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Previous studies analyzed the use of Cobb angles in the measurement of idiopathic and congenital scoliosis, but ...
متن کاملPathogenesis of progressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Platelet activation and vascular biology in immature vertebrae: an alternative molecular hypothesis.
Altered paraspinal muscle activity was suggested by Lowe et al (2002) to explain a relationship between Cobb angle changes and platelet calmodulin level changes in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). We formulate an alternative platelet-skeletal hypothesis which involves: (1) a small scoliosis curve; (2) axial loads transmitted directly from the intervertebral discs to vertebral body growth ...
متن کاملCobb Angle Quantification for Scoliosis using Image Processing Techniques
Measurement of Cobb angle is the standard technique used for scoliosis assessment. The challenging task in computerized method lies in totally automating the method of curvature measurement from digital X-ray images. In this paper we presented a method which automatically measures the Cobb angle from radiographs after selection of the end vertebrae of the curve. The image processing methods use...
