Managing Drug Toxicities & Drug Interactions: Clinical Pharmacology Case-based Discussion
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction A drug interaction occurs when one drug alters the pharmacological effect (enhanced or decreased) of another drug. In human medicine there are several resources available to screen for drug interactions, and there are specific guidelines and agencies to report suspected drug interactions to. In veterinary medicine screening, monitoring, and reporting of drug interactions are rarely performed; therefore, the incidence of drug interactions in companion animals is unknown. With the increase in number of approved veterinary drugs, continued use of human drugs, compounding, and extra label drug use, the potential for drug interactions is likely to increase. Today, multiple drugs are often prescribed to treat or control disease in companion animals, and this combination therapy can increase the potential for drug interactions. A drug interaction can occur during the preparation, administration, or dispensing process. Types of drug interactions include pharmaceutical (drug-formulation), pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic. Veterinarians should be aware of the more common drug interactions and the resources available for screening to avoid such interactions.

FOR HKMA Antidepressant drugs have unique toxicities that are based on their pharmacology and determine their specific treatment. There are currently 4 classes of antidepressant drugs: monoamine oxidase inhibitors, cyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and the atypical antidepressants which include a variety of other drugs. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ...
متن کاملNear-fatal drug toxicities in newborn babies: A Case Series
Background: Neonates are highly vulnerable to drug toxicities because of their age-related limitations in drug metabolisms and renal excretion. Lack of the knowledge and/or education for medical professionals about the right dose administration and the lack of neonate-specific formulations are the additional dilemmas. Cases Presentation: Here, we reported six neonates presented with severe ...

متن کاملOral agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus: pharmacology, toxicity, and treatment.
Currently available oral agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus include a variety of compounds from 5 different pharmacologic classes with differing mechanisms of action, adverse effect profiles, and toxicities. The oral antidiabetic drugs can be classified as either hypoglycemic agents (sulfonylureas and benzoic acid derivatives) or antihyperglycemic agents (biguanides, alpha-glu...

This white paper addresses current approaches and knowledge gaps concerning methods to assess the role of transport proteins in drug/metabolite disposition in humans. The discussion focuses on in vitro tools to address key questions in drug development, including vesicle- and cell-based systems. How these methods can be used to assess the liability of compounds for transporter-based drug-drug i...
