Halting Planet Migration in the Evacuated Centers of Protoplanetary Disks

چکیده

Precise Doppler searches for extrasolar planets find a surfeit of planets with orbital periods of 3–4 days, and no planets with orbital periods less than 3 days. The circumstellar distance, R0, where small grains in a protoplanetary disk reach sublimation temperature (∼ 1500 K) corresponds to a period of∼ 6 days. Interior to R0, turbulent accretion due to magneto-rotational instability may evacuate the disk center. We suggest that planets with orbital periods of 3–4 days are so common because migrating planets halt once this evacuated region contains the sites of their exterior 2:1 Lindblad resonances. Halting Type I planet migration in non-isothermal disks

Aims. We investigate the effect of including a proper energy balance on the interaction of a low-mass planet with a protoplanetary disk. Methods. We use a three-dimensional version of the RODEO method to perform hydrodynamical simulations including the energy equation. Radiation is included in the flux-limited diffusion approach. Results. The sign of the torque is sensitive to the ability of th...

Type I Planet Migration in Nearly Laminar Disks

We describe 2D hydrodynamic simulations of the migration of low-mass planets (≤ 30M⊕) in nearly laminar disks (viscosity parameter α < 10 ) over timescales of several thousand orbit periods. We consider disk masses of 1, 2, and 5 times the minimum mass solar nebula, disk thickness parameters of H/r = 0.035 and 0.05, and a variety of α values and planet masses. Disk selfgravity is fully included...

Halting planet migration by photoevaporation from the central source

The recent discovery of Jupiter-mass planets orbiting at a few AU from their stars compliments earlier detections of massive planets on very small orbits. The short period orbits strongly suggest that planet migration has occurred, with the likely mechanism being tidal interactions between the planets and the gas disks out of which they formed. The newly discovered long period planets, together...

Giant Planet Migration, Disk Evolution, and the Origin of Transitional Disks

We present models of giant planet migration in evolving protoplanetary disks. Our disks evolve subject to viscous transport of angular momentum and photoevaporation, while planets undergo Type II migration. We use a Monte Carlo approach, running large numbers of models with a range in initial conditions. We find that relatively simple models can reproduce both the observed radial distribution o...

Planetesimal and Protoplanet Dynamics in a Turbulent Protoplanetary Disk: Ideal Unstratified Disks

The dynamics of planetesimals and planetary cores may be strongly influenced by density perturbations due to magnetorotational turbulence in their natal protoplanetary gas disks. Using the local shearing box approximation, we perform numerical simulations of planetesimals moving as massless particles in a turbulent, magnetized, unstratified gas disk. Our fiducial disk model has turbulent accret...
