چکیده

Mammographic risk assessment provides an indication of the likelihood of women developing breast cancer. Anumber ofmammographic image based classification methods have been developed, such as Wolfe, Boyd, BI-RADS and Tabár based assessment. We provide a comparative study of these four approaches. Results on the full MIAS database are presented, which indicate strong correlation (Spearman’s > 0.9) between Wolfe, Boyd andBI-RADSbased classification, whilst the correlation with Tabár based classification is less straight forward (Spearman’s < 0.5, but low correlations mainly caused by one of the classes).

Mammographic image segmentation and risk classification based on mammographic parenchymal patterns and geometric moments

Mammographic risk assessment is becoming increasingly important in decision making in screening mammography and computer aided diagnosis systems. Strong evidence shows that characteristic patterns of breast tissue as seen in mammography, referred to as mammographic parenchymal patterns, provide crucial information about breast cancer risk. Quantitative evaluation of the characteristic mixture o...

A Novel Breast Image Preprocessing For Full Field Digital Mammographic Segmentation and Risk Classification

To obtain optimal breast image quality during the image acquisition, a compression paddle is used to even the breast thickness. Clinical observation has indicated that breast peripheral areas may not be fully compressed, and may cause unexpected intensity and texture variation within these areas. Such breast parenchymal appearance discrepancies may not be desirable for tissue modelling within c...

Comparison of Danish dichotomous and BI-RADS classifications of mammographic density

BACKGROUND In the Copenhagen mammography screening program from 1991 to 2001, mammographic density was classified either as fatty or mixed/dense. This dichotomous mammographic density classification system is unique internationally, and has not been validated before. PURPOSE To compare the Danish dichotomous mammographic density classification system from 1991 to 2001 with the density BI-RADS...

Local Feature Based Breast Tissue Appearance Modelling for Mammographic Risk Assessment

Many studies have indicated that there is a strong correlation between breast tissue density/patterns and the risk of developing breast cancer. Therefore, modelling breast tissue appearance in mammograms is important for automated mammographic risk assessment. In this paper, we present a method for building models of breast tissue appearance based on local features in mammographic images. Mammo...

Automatic Classification of Mammographic Parenchymal Patterns: A Statistical Approach

Breast parenchymal density has been found to be a strong indicator for breast cancer risk [1], however, to date, measures of breast density are qualitative and require the judgement of the radiologist. Objective, quantitative measures of breast density are crucial tools for assessing the association between the risk of breast cancer and mammographic density as well as for quantification of dens...
