Real Time Communication - Modes of Use in Distributed Teams
نویسندگان
چکیده
SkypeTM has become a prominent and successful example of a new genre of computer-mediated communication environments called Real Time Communication (RTC). A limited set of integrated features enable instantaneous text, voice and video communication across the globe for free. However, an analysis of the features or affordances of the technology does not reveal the wealth and creativity of forms and modes of using SkypeTM. Hence we have collected five case vignettes to illustrate how SkypeTM has been embedded into the daily routines of distributed teams. From a theoretical lens, this comparative study shows how general purpose technology can only be properly understood in context because users shape the forms of usage to a large extent through processes of appropriation. The study also provides insights into processes of technology appropriation and the various roles and appearances of presence in virtual work settings.

AIDA II Automatic control in distributed applications
Machine industry faces a shift where more and more functionality is implemented in software on distributed computer systems. Many difficult problems then face designers including system modelling, analysis and management of multi disciplinary design teams. There is a need to transfer theoretical results to industrial practice, necessitating the integration of existing work from separate discipl...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Role of Synchronous and Asynchronous Communication in Agile Software Development and Its Effect on Quality
Through inward perceptions, we intuitively expect distributed software development to increase the risks associated with achieving quality goals. To compound this problem, agile software development (ASD) maintains that face-to-face (synchronous) communication attributed to co-location of the development team is a key success factor. The following study explored the relationship between synchro...
متن کاملEffects of time pressure and communication environment on team processes and outcomes in dyadic planning
An experiment compared dyadic performance in a radio communication and a more sophisticated communication environment to face-to-face (FtF) meetings. Thirty-six dyads, working under low or high time-pressure conditions, needed to combine information and to produce a written plan. Teams working in the sophisticated communication environment collaborated from separate locations over a networked c...
متن کاملThe Impact of Computer Mediated Communication on Information Overload in Distributed Teams
This paper investigates the impact of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) in distributed teams on real or perceived Information Overload (IO). Typically, these organizations rely on CMC for communication because teams working on joint projects are spatially dispersed and have to communicate across space and time zones. Many of the problems observed in virtual teams seem to be related to commu...

Advances in wireless communication technology allow the development of distributed robotic applications consisting of teams of autonomous mobile units that can cooperate to achieve a common goal. Real-time communication among mobile wireless units, however, requires a careful management of the shared channel in order to achieve a certain level of predictability in message exchanging. This paper...
