Wake and Impedance

چکیده
We begin with interactions of particles that moving with constant velocity in free space. If the material walls are far from the particles, their effect in the first approximation can be neglected. Let us consider a leading particle of charge q moving with velocity v, and a trailing particle of unit charge moving behind the leading one on a parallel path at a distance s with an offset x, as shown in Fig. 1. We want to find the force which the leading particle exerts on the trailing one. We will use the following expressions for the electric and magnetic fields of a particle moving with a constant velocity (see, e.g., [4]):

Impedance and Wake eld in a Superconducting Beam
The impedance and the longitudinal wake eld in a superconducting beam pipe are derived. At low frequencies, this impedance is purely inductive, while at higher frequencies it approaches the resistive-wall impedance of a normal conductor. For very short bunches, the resistive heating of the beam pipe can induce quenches of the superconductor.
متن کاملImpedance of Beam Pipes with Smooth Shallow Corrugations
The beam impedance of monopole modes in a pipe with periodic, smooth and shallow corrugation has been calculated. The approach uses an orthogonal TM field expansion with Bessel functions and an impedance boundary condition, which takes into account resistive wall effects. The approach is valid for corrugations with period lengths larger, smaller and of the same order as the free space wavelengt...

متن کاملResistive Wall Impedance of Beam Pipes of General Cross Section
A method of calculating the coupling impedance and the wake function of resistive beam pipes is given including the short-range behavior of the wake. The pipe is uniform longitudinally but the cross section is arbitrary. The beam is assumed to be ultra-relativistic. A simple computer code is written using the boundary element method. Some results for elliptic, rectangular and hyperbolic pipes a...
متن کاملIntensity Limitations by Combined And/or (un)conventional Impedance Sources
The main intensity limitations in future hadron or positron rings are expected to come from unconventional loss mechanisms. First, we will present a review of the single bunch collective effects driven by electron cloud. The wake field generated by an electron cloud can lead to transverse beam instability and loss over a few turns. The electron cloud wake field is highly unconventional, since t...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Wake Field Effects in the Pep-ii Slac B- Factory*
We present the history and analysis of different wake field effects throughout the operational life of the PEP-II SLAC B-factory. Although the impedance of the high and low energy rings is small, the intense high current beams generated a lot of power. The effects from these wake fields are: heating and damage of vacuum beam chamber elements like RF seals, vacuum valves , shielded bellows, BPM ...
