چکیده

The use of enzymes for hair loosening in leather processing provides a cleaner option. However, there is need to improve the efficiency of these unit operations involving bioprocess by way of process intensification techniques, such as, the use of ultrasound. In this paper, the use of ultrasound has been studied in native enzyme papain (A) based hair-loosening system and compared with commercially available enzyme Microdep-C (B), combination of enzyme system (A+B) and conventional Na2S system. Various process parameters, such as, enzyme concentration, time and ultrasound power on the hair-loosening efficacy, were studied. Enzyme concentration (5-6%) and ultrasound (100 W) were found to give better hair loosening under given process conditions. The results indicated that papain based unhairing system was better and the use of ultrasound provided better hair-loosening efficacy. The reason for the ultrasound driven enhancement could be due to better diffusion of enzymes through skin matrix to reach the hair-bulb cite for interaction and dispersion of unhairing formulation employed. Thus, the present process provides novel, eco-friendly, enzymatic unhairing system in leather processing based on native enzyme or a combination of enzyme system.

Skin and leather characteristics of hair-type goats reared in a hot-humid region

Skin and leather characteristics of hair-type goats were studied in relation to their sex and age, using 100 randomly-selected skin from goats reared in east west Iran. Mean weights of skin and leather were 859.2±35.2 and 357.4±16.2 g, and the length and width of leather ranged from 60 to 121 and 41 to 87 cm, respectively. Age had a significant effect on the weight and area of skin and leather....

Ultrasound Assisted In Situ Esterification of Rubber Seeds Oil for Biodiesel Production (RESEARCH NOTE)

Since the conventional esterification method requires longer processing time and obtain low yield, the intensification of this process is still interesting subject to be investigated. To reduce the oil extraction cost from seeds which almost 70% of total processing cost, in situ esterification has been recently introduced. The objective of study was to produce biodiesel from rubber seeds oil th...

A novel method for determining surface charge and isoelectric point of leather

Surface charge and isoelectric point of leather play an important role in the production of leather. However, a precise and rapid method for the determination of leather surface charge and isoelectric point is unavailable nowadays due to the complexity of the structure of leather, especially for chromefree tanned leather. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a quantitative determination method...

The Chemistry of the Leather Industry

Animal skin that has been processed to retain its flexibility, toughness, and waterproof nature is known as leather, and the leather industry is New Zealand's seventh largest industry. New Zealand leather is made by processing the skins of animals slaughtered in the meat processing industry, and hence the majority of skins tanned are those of sheep and cattle. Animal skins are converted to leat...

Microbial and Other Enzymes

Probably the oldest method known for removing the hair from animal skins is to allow the fresh skins to remain for a day or two in a warm, damp place. In this process called "sweating," bacteria decompose the cells of the Malpighian layer and thus loosen the hair. Because of the difficulties of controlling the process and the constant danger of the destruction of valuable leather-making protein...
