چکیده

Title of Thesis: EMBEDDED STRAIN SENSOR WITH POWER SCAVENGING FROM BRIDGE VIBRATION Ming Wang, Master of Science, 2004 Thesis directed by: Professor Peter C. Chang Department of Civil Engineering The Objective of this thesis is to investigate an embedded strain sensor system with power scavenged from highway bridge vibration for structure health monitoring. A power scavenging scheme is developed to power the sensor system so as to eliminate the dependence of batteries. Three mechanisms (PZT patch, cantilever beam and PZT stacks/slugs) are described that are suitable for the remote sensor system to scavenge mechanical energy at different locations in a bridge. Calculations and experiments are taken to examine the feasibility of the idea, and predicted power generation is compared to solar/light power. A scheme of an embedded strain sensor using resonant MEMS beam structure is introduced along with the theoretical analysis and simulation. The last consideration is the signal propagation attenuation in concrete. Measurements are taken to determine the RF signal attenuation at 900 MHz range transmitted through a concrete slab. Theoretical calculations are validated by experimental results.

Alternative Geometries for Increasing Power Density in Vibration Energy Scavenging for Wireless Sensor Networks

Vibration energy scavenging with piezoelectric material can currently generate up to 300 microwatts per cubic centimeter, making it a viable method of powering low-power electronics. Given the growing interest in small-scale devices, particularly wireless sensor networks, concerns over how to indefinitely power them have become extremely relevant. Current limiting factors in the field of piezoe...

Thick-film Piezoceramic Micro-generators

A sensor node is generally small in physical size (typically a few cm or smaller) and consist of a sensor, a transceiver, and supporting electronics. They are connected as a wireless network and are sometimes isolated and embedded in structures, which are not easily accessible. The lifespan of the sensor node is critically dependent upon the power source it contains. Instead of using a limited ...

Cover Page Title: Reliable High-Rate Bridge Monitoring using Dense Wireless Sensor Arrays

Wireless sensor networks have been proposed extensively over the past several years as a means of alleviating instrumentation costs associated with structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure. However, low data throughput, unacceptable packet yield rates, and limited system resources have generally plagued many deployments by limiting the number of sensors and their sampling rate. It h...

Energy harvesting of radio frequency and vibration energy to enable wireless sensor monitoring of civil infrastructure

To power distributed wireless sensor networks on bridges, traditional power cables or battery replacement are excessively expensive or infeasible. This project develops two power harvesting technologies. First, a novel parametric frequency-increased generator (PFIG) is developed. The fabricated PFIG harvests the non-periodic and unprecedentedly low frequency (DC to 30 Hz) and low acceleration (...
