Moving Targets: Modeling Developmental Trajectories of Adolescent Alcohol Misuse, Individual and Peer Risk Factors, and Intervention Effects

چکیده
From a developmental perspective, a central goal ofprevention is to alter behaviors that are already changing-that is, to redirect potentially risky trajectories. This multiwave panel study examines the longer-tem e f i t s of a prevention program on trajectories of alcohol misuse and related risk factors (susceptibility to peer pressure to misbehave and exposure to peer alcohol use). We conceptually and empirically compare Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) and Latent Growth Curve Modeling (LCM), working within the tradition of each technique andnoting similarities and differences in approaches, hypothesis operationalizations, andjhdings. Five waves of data (Grades 6 to 10, n = 675)fiom the Alcohol Misuse Prevention Study, a randomized treatment-control group study designed to examine the efects of a school-based prevention program that focused on increasing social (especially re&ar) skills, were analjaed. H M a n d LCManalyses showedsusceptibility, exposure, and alcohol misuse increased mostly linearly across adolescence and covariedpositively within and across time, arguing that they exist in a mutually reinforcing web of influence. Both techniques revealed small treatment effects, with the prevention reducing the normative increase in alcohol misuse during adolescence. There were some minor, but important, differences between H M a n d LCMin conclusions about intervention effects. Substantive and developmental methodological implications are discussed.

Childhood predictors and mid-adolescent correlates of developmental trajectories of alcohol use among male and female youth.
The identification of salient risk factors for alcohol consumption among male and female adolescents is an important topic not only for etiology research but also for designing effective gender-specific alcohol prevention programs for young people. This study examined the extent to which problematic alcohol use trajectories from ages 14 to 18 among male and female youth were related to childhoo...

PURPOSE To determine if peer risk (having friends who drink or approve of drinking) modifies the effects of a computer-facilitated screening and provider brief advice (cSBA) intervention on adolescent alcohol use. METHODS We assessed the intervention effect using logistic regression modeling with generalized estimating equations on a sample of 2,092 adolescents. Effect modification by peer ri...

OBJECTIVE To assess longitudinal trajectories of college males' sexually aggressive behaviors and determine time-varying individual- and peer-level risk factors that differentiate men who follow these different paths. METHOD Our analytic sample consisted of 795 men who participated in a longitudinal study on high-risk behaviors among college students. The sample was surveyed at the end of eac...

This study investigates an association between social network characteristics and binge drinking from adolescence to young adulthood, utilizing National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n = 7,966) and employing social network and longitudinal analysis. Lower integration and socialization with alcohol-using peers had immediate risks of binge drinking during adolescence; however, over tim...
