چکیده
Towards an investigation of speech energetics using 'AnTon': an animatronic model of a human tongue and Natural human speech contains a large amount of variation which poses difficulties for contemporary applications of speech technology. Following Lindblom's theory of hyper-and hy-pospeech (H&H), variation in speech is governed by a general principle, which is to optimise the ratio of information throughput to the energy invested. Even though such a relation is often implicitly assumed by researchers, it has never been quantified in terms of actual energy consumption. This is due to the difficulty of measuring speech energetics in humans. This paper introduces an animatronic model of the vocal tract – 'AnTon' – which has been designed to quantify energy relations in human speech production. Experiments are reported that demonstrate the animatronic tongue's ability to imitate basic human speech gestures.

Anton: an animatronic model of a human tongue and vocal tract
This paper describes AnTon, the first animatronic model of a human tongue and vocal tract which is being developed using biomimetic design principles. The present model consists of movable tongue and jaw models that are connected to a fixed hyoid bone and a skull. AnTon’s ability to reproduce speech gestures has been investigated using MRI scans of human subjects producing standard vowels. In t...
متن کاملAnimatronic model of a human tongue
Contemporary speech technology struggles with the variation that occurs in natural speech. In order to explain such variation, researchers frequently refer to processes of energy optimisation that govern speech production. Although there is plenty of qualitative evidence, quantitative data about speech energetics are still sparse because it is difficult to acquire them from human subjects. To o...
متن کاملAvicenna's Anatomical Legacy as Seen Through the Relevant Topics in Modern Anat-omy
Background: Makhaarej Al-Horouf, the study of speech sounds by Avicenna is a valuable piece of work in the study of speech sounds, which was written about ten centuries ago. It contains six chapters on sound, anatomy of vocal tract, and phonetics. It is amazing to find that Avicenna’s explanations are congruent with the findings of modern scholarship in relevant topics. The study was intended t...
متن کاملGel-type tongue for a physical model of the human vocal tract as an educational tool in acoustics of speech production
replicated Chiba and Kajiyama[2]'s mechanical models of the human vocal tract from transparent materials and showed that the models are useful as educational tools. Since then, we have continued to develop educational tools, because we feel that physical models of the human vocal tract should be widely used for education, especially in speech sciences [3–12]. Arai (2001) [1] proposed two types ...
متن کاملTowards Articulatory Speech Synthesis with a Dynamic 3D Finite Element Tongue Model
We describe work towards articulatory speech synthesis driven by realistic 3D tissue and bone models. The vocal tract shape is modeled using a fast 3D finite element method (FEM) of a muscle-activated human tongue in conjunction with fixed rigid models of jaw, hyoid and palate connected to a deformable mesh representing the airway. Actuation of the tissue model deforms the airway providing a ti...
