چکیده

This paper presents CSMA/ECA, which combines the efficiency of reservation-based protocols and the simplicity of random access mechanisms. The maximum efficiency of CSMA/CA with optimal parameter adjustment is easily exceeded by CSMA/ECA, even when fixed parameters are used by the latter. CSMA/ECA stations fairly coexist with legacy CSMA/CA and increase the portion of time that is devoted to successful transmissions while decreasing the number of collisions and empty slots. We show that the performance of CSMA/ECA is also clearly superior to the legacy one in lossy channels. The proposed mechanism initially behaves as a CSMA/CA network, but it progressively converges to a collision-free deterministic operation. The convergence process can be modelled as a Markov Chain to assess the duration of the transitory phase.

On the Distributed Construction of a Collision-Free Schedule in WLANs

In wireless local area networks (WLANs), a media access protocol arbitrates access to the channel. In current IEEE 802.11 WLANs, carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is used. Carrier sense multiple access with enhanced collision avoidance (CSMA/ECA) is a subtle variant of the well-known CSMA/CA algorithm that offers substantial performance benefits. CSMA/ECA signific...

Traffic Differentiation in Dense Collision-free WLANs

The ability to perform traffic differentiation is a promising feature of the current Medium Access Control (MAC) in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The Enhaced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) MAC protocol for WLANs proposes up to four Access Categories (AC) that can be mapped to different traffic priorities. High priority ACs are allowed to transmit more often than low priority ACs, pro...

Towards a Collision-Free WLAN: Dynamic Parameter Adjustment in CSMA/E2CA

Carrier sense multiple access with enhanced collision avoidance (CSMA/ECA) is a distributed MAC protocol that allows collisionfree access to the medium in WLANs. The only difference between CSMA/ECA and the well-known CSMA/CA is that the former uses a deterministic backoff after successful transmissions. Collision-free operation is reached after a transient state during which some collisions ma...

Collision-free Operation in High Density WLAN Deployments

WiFi’s popularity has led to crowded scenarios composed of many Access Points (AP) and clients, often operating on overlapping channels, producing interference that gravely degrades performance. This misallocation of resources is often the result of multiple WLANs ownership, that is, networks are frequently setup automatically without considering neighbouring APs. In this work we overview the e...

The IEEE 802.3 and 802.11 standards are used to define CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) based on the Ethernet LAN (Local Area Networks) and Wireless LAN (WLAN) protocol, respectively. This report deals with the comparison of IEEE 802.3 and IEEE802.11 MAC protocol in terms of the physical and medium access control (MAC) layer. CSMA/CD Ethernet-based protocol is th...
