Broadband marine MT exploration of the East Pacific Rise at 9 50 0 N

چکیده
[1] We present the first use at a mid-ocean ridge of a recently developed broadband marine magnetotelluric (MT) instrument. The extended high frequency performance of the instrument allows resolution of electrical resistivity structure at shallower depths than traditional marine MT sensors. Our two-dimensional inversion model from data collected at four MT sites on the East Pacific Rise (EPR) at 9 500N demonstrates the viability of the method to image electrical resistivity structure in both the crust and shallow mantle. While our pilot experiment falls far short of the coverage needed to provide rigorous constraints on structure, a low resistivity zone in the crustal portion of the inversion model agrees well with seismic tomography and seafloor compliance results. Resistivities beneath the ridge imply a crustal partial melt fraction of 1–20%. A total melt volume of about 0.75 km per kilometer of ridge implies an average melt residence time of about 1000 years.

متن کاملComplete Genome Sequence of Hyperthermophilic Archaeon Thermococcus sp. EXT12c, Isolated from the East Pacific Rise 9°N
We report the genome sequence of Thermococcus sp. EXT12c isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent at the East Pacific Rise 9°N. Microbes in the genus Thermococcus are able to grow anaerobically at high temperature, around neutral pH, and some of them under high hydrostatic pressure.
متن کاملA new species of deep-sea Tegastidae (Crustacea: Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from 9°50'N on the East Pacific Rise, with remarks on its ecology.
Both male and female of the new deep-sea species Smacigastes barti sp. nov. (Tegastidae, Sars) are described in detail. Copepoda is one of the most diversified taxa at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, but only one species of the family Tegastidae has been described from this habitat and other deep-sea environments. Smacigastes barti is the second species of the genus SmacigastesIvanenko & Defaye, 2...
متن کاملWhole mantle shear structure beneath the East Pacific Rise
[1] We model broadband seismograms containing triplicated S, S, and S along with ScS to produce a pure path one-dimensional model extending from the crust to the core-mantle boundary beneath the East Pacific Rise. We simultaneously model all body wave shapes and amplitudes, thereby eliminating depth-velocity ambiguities. The data consist of western North American broadband recordings of East Pa...
متن کاملHabitat associations of floating debris and marine birds in the North East Pacific Ocean at coarse and meso spatial scales.
While many surface foraging seabirds ingest plastic, the spatial overlap of these far-ranging predators with debris aggregations at-sea is poorly understood. We surveyed concurrent distributions of marine birds and debris along a 4400 km cruise track within a debris accumulation area in the North East Pacific Ocean using line and strip transect methods. Analysis of debris and bird distributions...
