چکیده

In this paper we discuss newly developed microfabrication methods for liquid crystal polymer (LCP). LCP is a thermoplastic polymer made of aligned molecule chains with crystal-like spatial regularity. It exhibits unique electrical, physical and chemical properties, making it suitable for certain MEMS applications. MEMS-compatible fabrication processes such as metallization, plasma bulk etching and thermal bonding have been developed in our work. We demonstrated two micro sensor applications involving the LCP material.

A diaphragm-based pressure sensor packaged using liquid crystal polymer and silicone oil for underwater applications

Reliable hermetic packaging of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensor arrays for underwater applications always presents a formidable challenge, which is further compounded by the unforgiving harsh sea environments, during the design, fabrication and characterization stages of the sensor arrays. As such, a flexible underwater diaphragm-based pressure sensor array packaging scheme ...

Plastic Hermetic Packages for MEMS?

The sealed hermetic package is over 100 years old if we include cathode ray and vacuum tubes. While the package has changed, the idea of making a near-perfect gas-tight enclosure has remained constant. The metal and ceramic full hermetic package may be required for applications that cannot use the non-hermetic plastic package, but is there an intermediate package choice? During the last few yea...

Sputtered Encapsulation as Wafer Level Packaging for Isolatable MEMS Devices: A Technique Demonstrated on a Capacitive Accelerometer

This paper discusses sputtered silicon encapsulation as a wafer level packaging approach for isolatable MEMS devices. Devices such as accelerometers, RF switches, inductors, and filters that do not require interaction with the surroundings to function, could thus be fully encapsulated at the wafer level after fabrication. A MEMSTech 50g capacitive accelerometer was used to demonstrate a sputter...

Self assembled liquid crystal polymers on photo-irradiated alignment surfaces for tailoring response properties of liquid crystal molecules.

A liquid crystal polymer (LCP) self-assembled on a photoirradiated substrate can modify the viscoelastic response of liquid crystal medium on the substrate. Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy shows that the phenyl groups of LCP are oriented epitaxially with layer thickness and an in-plane alignment order much higher than that at the photoirradiated surface can be yielded. The liquid crystal...
