Laparoscopic colposuspension. Is it cost-effective?
نویسندگان
چکیده
BACKGROUND The laparoscopic approach must be shown to be cost-effective as well as safe and technically effective before being widely adopted. A review of 54 consecutive patients who underwent open and laparoscopic colposuspension is presented and a cost-analysis is performed comparing the two approaches. METHODS This study was a retrospective controlled review of patient records and accounts of in-hospital costs incurred at a private hospital. RESULTS Theater costs were significantly greater in the laparoscopic group but this was balanced by a shorter length of stay and subsequent reduced accommodation cost. There was no difference in the overall in-hospital costs between the two groups. CONCLUSION The laparoscopic surgical approach is safe and effective and by no means more expensive than the open approach. In the future, the laparoscopic approach can only become more cost efficient; techniques will improve and there will be earlier returns to work and, subsequently, greater productivity.

متن کاملA cost-effectiveness analysis of tension-free vaginal tape versus laparoscopic mesh colposuspension for primary female stress incontinence.
BACKGROUND Evaluation of cost-effectiveness of new surgical techniques is important. As the data on incontinence procedures are scarce, we evaluated the cost-effectiveness of tension-free vaginal tape procedure and laparoscopic mesh colposuspension as a primary surgical treatment for female stress urinary incontinence. METHODS In four university teaching hospitals and two central hospitals 12...
متن کاملCost-analyzes based on a prospective, randomized study comparing laparoscopic colposuspension with a tension-free vaginal tape procedure.
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare laparoscopic colposuspension with tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) in terms of costs to the county. METHODS In a prospective, randomized study, we approached 270 consecutive women presenting for evaluation of stress urinary incontinence symptoms at one university hospital. Preoperatively, and at 1-year follow-up, the women underwent urodynamic ev...
متن کاملCost effectiveness of tension-free vaginal tape for the surgical management of female stress incontinence.
OBJECTIVES Stress urinary incontinence affects between 10 percent and 50 percent of women. Surgery is commonly recommended for troublesome incontinence that does not respond to nonsurgical management. Tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) is a newer, minimal access surgical sling procedure, which is being increasingly adopted worldwide. The cost-effectiveness of TVT in comparison with other surgical ...
متن کاملdvances in laparoscopic techniques in pelvic reconstructive surgery for rolapse and incontinence
Advances in minimally invasive surgery have led to an increasing adoption of laparoscopic techniques in pelvic reconstructive surgery and treatment of urinary incontinence. Our review of recent developments aims to identify and evaluate the evidence for use of these procedures. Recent literature continues to support the use of laparoscopy for colposuspension and sacrocolpopexy, as an effective ...
