چکیده

Caffeine is said to have, non-specific arousal enhancing effects and specific cognitive effects (Van der Stelt & Snel, 1993, 1998). If true, especially in states of fatigue the energising effects of caffeine should be found more prominently. The antihypnoid or fatigue compensating effects of moderate amounts of caffeine, appear to be caused predominantly by the blocking of inhibitory adenosine receptors which are found diffusely distributed in the brain. It implies that effects of caffeine will be seen as increases of cortical arousal. Indeed, caffeine has been found to induce increased cortical arousal, manifested as increasein frequency in the EEG. Also, after ingesting caffeine doses up to 250 mg caffeine, subjects report a decrease of fatigue, sleepiness or drowsiness, increased alertness or more vigour (e.g. Koopmans & Van Boxtel, 1988; Reyner & Horne, 1997). Bonnet and Arand (1992) used caffeine to develop a physiological arousal model of chronic insomnia in a group of healthy adults. The subjects received three times daily 400 mg caffeine for 7 nights and days. In addition to a reduced sleep efficiency, sleepiness during day time, as measured with the MSLT, was significantly increased (cf. Koopmans & Van Boxtel, 1988). Obviously, arousing effects of caffeine at night may cause increased sleepiness during daytime.

R-00386-2002.R1 Central Nervous System Effects of Caffeine and Adenosine on Fatigue

Caffeine ingestion can delay fatigue during exercise, but the mechanisms remain elusive. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that blockade of CNS adenosine receptors may explain the beneficial effect of caffeine on fatigue. Initial experiments were done to confirm an effect of CNS caffeine and/or the adenosine A1/A2 receptor agonist, NECA, on spontaneous locomotor activity. Thirty mi...

Comparison of The Effect of Eight Weeks of Combined Exercises and Caffeine Supplementation on Anaerobic Capacity, Fatigue index, Aerobic Endurance and Skill Test in Elite Female Taekwondo Athletes

Introduction and purpose: One of the concerns of professional athletes is to increase their performance. In intense activities, the rapid exhaustion of energy and the increase of lactic acid accumulation are among the factors of performance reduction during a period of competition. The purpose of this study was comparing the effect of eight weeks of combined training and caffeine supplementatio...

Exercise-Induced Fatigue and Caffeine Supplementation Affect Psychomotor Performance but Not Covert Visuo-Spatial Attention

Fatigue resulting from strenuous exercise can impair cognition and oculomotor control. These impairments can be prevented by administering psychostimulants such as caffeine. This study used two experiments to explore the influence of caffeine administered at rest and during fatiguing physical exercise on spatial attention-a cognitive function that is crucial for task-based visually guided behav...
