Abstract More and more data is collected everywhere. In corporate environments, information is collected and used to support decision making. Often business graphics are used to show aggregations of the collected business information. Treemaps, a visualization method, are well-known in the visualization community, but not readily available for exploring business information. Treemaps provide both detail and overview in a single image. In this thesis we show how to visualize business information using treemaps. Firstly, we present a method for generating tree structures from tabular business information. Next, we propose generalized treemaps, which enable the creation of many new variations on treemaps and business graphics. These variations combine strong points of both treemaps and business graphics. Additionally, we have developed MagnaView, a commercial visualization tool that implements all proposed techniques. We present a selection of variations on business graphics and treemaps that MagnaView can create.

Innovation trajectories for information visualizations: Comparing treemaps, cone trees, and hyperbolic trees

This paper reviews the trajectory of three information visualization innovations: treemaps, conetrees, and hyperbolic trees. These three ideas were first published in the early 1990s, so we are able to track academic publications, patents, trade press articles over almost two decades. We describe the early history of each approach, problems with data collection from differing sources, appropria...

Visualizing uncertainty for geographical information in the global terrorism database

Presenting information on a geopolitical map can offer powerful insight into a problem by leveraging an individual's innate capacity to discover patterns and to use map-related cues to incorporate pre-existing knowledge. This mode of presentation is not without its flaws, however, as the act of placing information at specific coordinates can imply a false sense of the data's geo-spatial certain...

Using Treemaps to Visualize the Analytic Hierarchy Process

Treemaps, a visualization method for large hierarchical data spaces, are used to augment the capabilities of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for decision-making. Two direct manipulation tools, presented metaphorically as a “pump” and a “hook,” were developed and applied to the treemap to support AHP sensitivity analysis. Users can change the importance of criteria dynamically on the two-di...

Facilitating Visual Queries in the TreeMap Using Distortion Techniques

TreeMap is one a common space-filling visualization technique to display large hierarchies in a limited display space. In TreeMaps, highlighting techniques are widely used to depict search results from visual queries. To improve visualizing the queries results in the TreeMap, we designed a continuous animated multi-distortion algorithm based on fisheye and continuous zooming techniques. To eval...

ArcTrees: Visualizing Relations in Hierarchical Data

In this paper we present, ARCTREES, a novel way of visualizing hierarchical and non-hierarchical relations within one interactive visualization. Such a visualization is challenging because it must display hierarchical information in a way that the user can keep his or her mental map of the data set and include relational information without causing misinterpretation. We propose a hierarchical v...
