چکیده

This paper introduces a 300-m global map of open permanent water bodies derived from multi-temporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The SAR dataset consisted of images of the radar backscatter acquired by Envisat Advanced SAR (ASAR) in Wide Swath Mode (WSM, 150 m spatial resolution) between 2005 and 2010. Extended time series of WSM to 2012, Image Mode Medium resolution (IMM) and Global Monitoring Mode (GMM) data have been used to fill gaps. Using as input the temporal variability (TV) of the backscatter and the minimum backscatter (MB), a SARbased indicator of water bodies (SAR-WBI) has been generated for all continents with a previously validated thresholding algorithm and local refinements. The accuracy of the SAR-WBI is 80%; a threshold of 50% has been used for the land/water fraction in the case of mixed pixels. Correction of inconsistencies with respect to auxiliary datasets, completion of gaps and aggregation to 300 m were applied to obtain the final global water body map referred to as Climate Change Initiative Land Cover Water Body (CCI-LC WB)

Humans, water, and the colonization of Australia.

The Pleistocene global dispersal of modern humans required the transit of arid and semiarid regions where the distribution of potable water provided a primary constraint on dispersal pathways. Here, we provide a spatially explicit continental-scale assessment of the opportunities for Pleistocene human occupation of Australia, the driest inhabited continent on Earth. We establish the location an...

Compilation and Validation of SAR and Optical Data Products for a Complete and Global Map of Inland/Ocean Water Tailored to the Climate Modeling Community

Accurate maps of surface water extent are of paramount importance for water management, satellite data processing and climate modeling. Several maps of water bodies based on remote sensing data have been released during the last decade. Nonetheless, none has a truly (90◦N/90◦S) global coverage while being thoroughly validated. This paper describes a global, spatially-complete (void-free) and ac...

Multi-year Global Land Cover Mapping at 300 M and Characterization for Climate Modelling: Achievements of the Land Cover Component of the Esa Climate Change Initiative

Essential Climate Variables were listed by the Global Climate Observing System as critical information to further understand the climate system and support climate modelling. The European Space Agency launched its Climate Change Initiative in order to provide an adequate response to the set of requirements for long-term satellite-based products for climate. Within this program, the CCI Land Cov...

How well do we know northern land cover? Comparison of four global vegetation and wetland products with a new ground-truth database for West Siberia

[1] An unprecedented collection of 2161 geolocated, irregularly spaced field observations of land cover spanning 10 km throughout West Siberia suggests that currently available land cover classification products are remarkably poor indicators of vegetation type and water body extent in this northern wetland environment. The ground-truth data are compared with (1) the Global Land Cover Character...

Datasets related to in‐land water for limnology and remote sensing applications: distance‐to‐land, distance‐to‐water, water‐body identifier and lake‐centre co‐ordinates

Datasets containing information to locate and identify water bodies have been generated from data locating static-water-bodies with resolution of about 300 m (1/360∘) recently released by the Land Cover Climate Change Initiative (LC CCI) of the European Space Agency. The LC CCI water-bodies dataset has been obtained from multi-temporal metrics based on time series of the backscattered intensity...
