Transfer of organic Br and Cl from the Biosphere to the Atmosphere during the Cretaceous/Tertiary Impact: Implications for the stratospheric Ozone Layer
نویسنده
چکیده
Following the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) meteoritic impact some 65 Myr ago, large portions of aboveground terrestrial biomass were burned. As a result, large amounts of various trace gases were injected to the atmosphere, inducing a wide range of effects on climate and ecosystems. Here, it is commented on the previously unaccounted for emission to the atmosphere of methyl bromide (CH3Br) and methyl chloride (CH3Cl) from extensive biomass burning that followed the impact. Based on reported biomass burning emission rates of the above organohalogens relative to CO2, it is estimated that their emissions from global fires resulted in tropospheric mixing ratios of around 20–65.8 ppbv organic Cl and 110–390 pptv organic Br. The above calculated mixing ratios of organic chlorine and bromine are more than an order of magnitude greater than their present, anthropogenically perturbed level and, although the ocean ultimately might absorb them, we argue here that they could still remain in the atmosphere for many years, and a substantial fraction could be transported to the stratosphere, thus substantially affecting the ozone layer. This would have led to very serious increases in short wavelength UV radiation reaching the lowermost atmosphere.

Detailed organic petrography analysis were conducted on drill core and cutting samples from the Nahr Umr (Middle Albian), Burgan (Lower Albian) and Ratawi (Hauterivian) formations on the Soroosh and Nowrooz fields, NW part of the Iranian sector of the Persian Gulf. The thermal maturity of the Middle Albian Nahr Umr Formation appears to have reached the top of the oil window. The underlying Burg...

Ozone and methane are chemically active climate-forcing agents affected by climate–chemistry interactions in the atmosphere. Key chemical reactions and processes affecting ozone and methane are presented. It is shown that climate-chemistry interactions have a significant impact on the two compounds. Ozone, which is a secondary compound in the atmosphere, produced and broken down mainly in the t...
متن کاملThe Oxidizing Power of the Atmosphere
The atmosphere is an oxidizing medium. Many environmentally important trace gases emitted from the Earth’s surface are removed from the atmosphere by oxidation. The list includes methane and other organic compounds, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur gases (Table 1). Understanding the processes and rates by which species are oxidized in the atmosphere, i.e., the oxidizing power of the...
متن کاملChanges in tropospheric composition and air quality due to stratospheric ozone depletion and climate change.
It is well-understood that reductions in air quality play a significant role in both environmental and human health. Interactions between ozone depletion and global climate change will significantly alter atmospheric chemistry which, in turn, will cause changes in concentrations of natural and human-made gases and aerosols. Models predict that tropospheric ozone near the surface will increase g...
