چکیده
Orientia tsutsugamushi is the etiological agent of scrub typhus, a mite-borne, febrile illness that occurs in the Asia-Pacific region. We conducted strain characterization of O. tsutsugamushi isolates from chiggers obtained from rodents based the nucleotide sequence of the 56-kDa outer membrane protein gene. Using polymerase chain reaction, a total of 68 DNA sequences of 56-kDa antigen genes were amplified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that there were at least six definable clusters among the 68 isolates: 37% Karp-related (25/68), 27% TA763 (18/68), 12% JG-related (8/68), 1 Copyright © 2011, American Society for Microbiology and/or the Listed Authors/Institutions. New Genotypes of Orientia tsutsugamushi Isolated from Humans in Eastern Taiwan
Scrub typhus, an acute febrile illness, is caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi. In our study, O. tsutsugamushi was rapidly detected and typed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the 56-kDa type-specific antigen (TSA) gene. To investigate the genotypes of clinical variants of O. tsutsugamushi, we col...
متن کاملGenotype diversity and distribution of Orientia tsutsugamushi causing scrub typhus in Thailand.
Scrub typhus, caused by antigenically disparate isolates of Orientia tsutsugamushi, is a widely distributed mite-borne human disease in the Asia Pacific region. Information regarding the heterogeneity of the immunodominant 56-kDa type-specific antigen (TSA) gene is crucial for the design and evaluation of scrub typhus-specific diagnostic assays and vaccines. Using indirect immunofluorescence as...
متن کاملCharacterization of Orientia tsutsugamushi strains isolated in Shandong Province, China by immunofluorescence and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses.
In order to identify the characteristics of the Sta56 gene of the 23 isolates of Orientia (O.) tsutsugamushi isolated in Shandong Province, indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) was used to identify the gene type of 23 strains O. tsutsugamushi isolated from scrub typhus patients, chigger mites, and rodents. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was also used to analyze the ...

A total of 4,281 rodents, belonging to 20 species, was collected from three villages in Chiangrai Province, northern Thailand, from January 1994 to December 2001. The predominant species were Rattus rattus, R. losea and Bandicota indica, accounting for 96% of the total. More than 135,000 chigger mites were removed from wild rodents of which 1% were identified as Leptotrombidium chiangraiensis, ...

In order to elucidate the host animals of scrub typhus in Shandong Province, epidemiological studies on host rodents of the autumn-winter type scrub typhus were carried out from 1995 to 2002 at four localities in the Shandong Province. Based upon ecological observations of the composition, seasonal fluctuation of animal hosts, isolation of Orientia tsutsugamushi, detection and identification of...
