Mathematics Instruction for Young Children

چکیده

Abstract Unfortunately, according to the United States of America Department of Education (2009), the mathematic achievement level for eighth grade students has continued to decline since the year of 1996. In an effort to improve achievement levels in the critical skill area of mathematics, researchers have suggested that immersion in mathematics at the Pre – K level is necessary, and that it is imperative that our school systems encourage students especially at a young age to embrace mathematics. The purpose of this study is to “plant the seed of interest” concerning mathematics, and to explore whether the use of discrete trial training (DTT) will improve the extent to which Pre – K students with disabilities learn basic mathematical concepts.

What Makes Mathematics Manipulatives Effective ? Lessons From Cognitive Science and Montessori Education

Manipulatives are ubiquitous in early childhood classrooms; yet, findings regarding their efficacy for learning mathematics concepts are inconsistent. In this article, we present four general principles that have emerged from cognitive science about ways to ensure that manipulatives promote learning when used with young children. We also describe how Montessori instruction offers a concrete exa...

The effects of the integration of mathematics within children's literature on early numeracy skills of young children with disabilities

THE EFFECTS OF THE INTEGRATION OF MATHEMATICS WITHIN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE ON EARLY NUMERACY SKILLS OF YOUNG CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES by Katherine B. Green Math skills are critical for future success in school (Eccles, 1997), as school-entry math knowledge is the strongest predictor of later academic achievement (Claessens, Duncan, & Engel, 2009). Researchers have found that teachers of young...

Your move: The effect of chess on mathematics test scores

We analyse the effect of substituting a weekly mathematics lesson in primary school grades 1-3 with a lesson in mathematics based on chess instruction. We use data from the City of Aarhus in Denmark, combining test score data with a comprehensive data set obtained from administrative registers. We use two different methodological approaches to identify and estimate treatment effects and we tend...

Young Children's Probabilistic Thinking

Task-based interviews were used to investigate some aspects of probabilistic thinking in 74 children (aged 5 to 12 years) from three different Australian schools, who had received little or no instruction in this topic. As expected, there was evidence of the development of probabilistic reasoning with age, but analysis of the children’s responses and explanations revealed a variety of decision ...
