چکیده

@r~ose. The compound eye of the honey-bee, Apis mellifera (L.), possesses retinular cells maximally sensitive to UV, blue and green wavelengths. Behavioumlly, the honey-bee exhibits trichromatic colour vision when searching for food sources and hive location. We therefore set out to sequence the opsins present in the compound eye of the honey-bee and to relate the amino acid sequences to the phylogeny and spectral tuning of the visual pigments. Methods. Opsin sequences were amplified by either conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on genomic DNA, or reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on mRNA extracted from heads using primers designed frbm consensus sequences of Drosophila opsins. Results. We have sequenced three opsins from the honey-bee. Two of the opsins show strong homology to the Drosophila Rhl and Rb2 opsins, while the third shows homology to the Rh4 opsin of Drosophila. Conclusions. The bee opsin showing homology to the Rh4 opsin is the outative UV oiement. whilst the oosins with seauence similaritv to ihe Rhl and&R%2 otisins are likily to be the’blue and greeh pigments. Candidate amino acids involved in spectral tuning of the opsins are identified.

Morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells after transplantation of stem cells into subretinal space

Introduction: Degenerative retinal diseases are main cause of irreversible blindness. Stem cells therapy is a promising way in these diseases. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells because of its safety can produce degenerated cells and can play important role in treatment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cells...

Histochemical study of retinal photoreceptors development during pre- and postnatal period and their association with retinal pigment epithelium

Objective(s):The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution and changes of glycoconjugates of retinal photoreceptors during both pre- and postnatal development. Materials and Methods: Tissue sections from days 15 to 20 of Wistar rat embryos and 1 to 12 postnatal days of rat newborns including developing eye were prepared for lectinhistochemistry technique. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-label...

Neural Stem Cell-based Intraocular Administration of Pigment Epithelium-derived Factor Promotes Retinal Ganglion Cell Survival and Axon Regeneration after Optic Nerve Crush Injury in Rat: An Experimental Study

Background: Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is regarded as a multifunctional protein possessing neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties. PEDF has a very short half-life, and it would require multiple injections to maintain a therapeutically relevant level without a delivery system. However, multiple injections are prone to cause local damage or infection. To overcome this, we chose...

The pineal gland does not control rod outer segment shedding and phagocytosis in the rat retina and pigment epithelium.

Diurnal patterns of retinal outer segment shedding and phagocytosis by the pigment epithelium were examined in pinealectomized, superior-cervical-ganglionectomized, and sham-operated rats. Phagocytosis was quantitatively similar in all groups. Sharp increases in the number of large phagosomes were observed soon after lights were turned on in the tree sets of animals. Pinealectomized animals kep...

Effects of extracellular Ca++, K+, and Na+ on cone and retinal pigment epithelium retinomotor movements in isolated teleost retinas

We have examined the effects of changes in extracellular ionic composition on cone and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) retinomotor movements in cultured isolated teleost retinas. In vivo, the myoid portion of teleost cones contracts in the light and elongates in the dark; RPE pigment disperses in the light and aggregates in the dark. In vitro, cones of dark-adapted (DA) retinas cultured in con...
