A Field-length based refinement criterion for adaptive mesh simulations of the interstellar medium

چکیده

Context. Adequate modelling of the multiphase interstellar medium requires optically thin radiative cooling, comprising an inherent thermal instability. The size of the occurring condensation and evaporation interfaces is determined by the so-called Field-length, which gives the dimension at which the instability is significantly damped by thermal conduction. Aims. Our aim is to study the relevance of conduction scale effects in the numerical modelling of a bistable medium and check the applicability of conventional and alternative adaptive mesh techniques. Methods. The low physical value of the thermal conduction within the ISM defines a multiscale problem, hence promoting the use of adaptive meshes. We here introduce a new refinement strategy that applies the Field condition by Koyama & Inutsuka as a refinement criterion. The described method is very similar to the Jeans criterion for gravitational instability by Truelove and efficiently allows to trace the unstable gas situated at the thermal interfaces. Results. We present test computations that demonstrate the greater accuracy of the newly proposed refinement criterion in comparison to refinement based on the local density gradient. Apart from its usefulness as a refinement trigger, we do not find evidence in favour of the Field criterion as a prerequisite for numerical stability.

New adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation

Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...

Remarks on Statistical Properties of the Turbulent Interstellar Medium

The supernova-driven interstellar medium in star-forming galaxies has Reynolds numbers of the order of 10 or even larger. We study, by means of adaptive mesh refinement hydroand magnetohydrodynamical simulations that cover the full available range (from 10 kpc to sub-parsec) scales, the statistical properties of the turbulent interstellar gas and the dimension of the most dissipative structures...

Applications of Local Adaptive Mesh Refinement Scheme for Engine Spray Simulations

The accurate prediction of fuel sprays is critical to engine combustion and emissions simulations. A fine computational mesh is often required to better resolve fuel spray dynamics and vaporization. However, computations with a fine mesh require extensive computer time. This study developed a methodology that uses a locally refined mesh in the spray region. Such adaptive mesh refinement will en...

Galaxy Mergers with Adaptive Mesh Refinement: Star Formation and Hot Gas Outflow

In hierarchical structure formation, merging of galaxies is frequent and known to dramatically affect their properties. To comprehend these interactions high-resolution simulations are indispensable because of the nonlinear coupling between pc and Mpc scales. To this end, we present the first adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulation of two merging, low mass, initially gas-rich galaxies (1.8×10...

Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Disk Galaxy Formation: the Magnetization of the Cold and Warm Medium

Using magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) adaptive mesh refinement simulations, we study the formation and early evolution of disk galaxies with a magnetized interstellar medium. For a 10 M⊙ halo with initial NFW dark matter and gas profiles, we impose a uniform 10 G magnetic field and follow its collapse, disk formation and evolution up to 1 Gyr. Comparing to a purely hydrodynamic simulation with the sa...
