Incremental Gravimetry: a Method for Two-parameter Model Building of Binary Gas Co-adsorption Equilibria

چکیده
This paper presents and develops a novel methodology to determine thermodynamic parameters of binary gas co-adsorption equilibria at given total pressure, based exclusively on binary gravimetric measurements at this same total pressure, together with single component isotherms. By “Incremental Gravimetry”, we designate a procedure in which the adsorbent sample is submitted to increments of composition of a flowing binary gas, and the corresponding increments of weight of the sample at equilibrium are measured. The experimental example is the co-adsorption of methane and carbon dioxide on Norit activated carbon near ambient temperature and pressure. The approach relies on the thermodynamics of non-ideal adsorbed solutions. The experimental methodology is described, the underlying theory is then presented. Compact analytical expressions are established that relate the measured limiting slopes of the incremental gravimetric curves (at infinite dilution of one component in the other) to quantities that derive only from the pure component isotherms, and to the infinite dilution activity coefficients. The latter are then uniquely determined. Classical two-parameter models for the composition dependence of activity coefficients are then implemented to reconstruct the complete binary isotherms and the incremental gravimetric curves. The comparison of the latter with the measured curves permits to test the different models. 1 ha l-0 07 85 32 0, v er si on 1 6 Fe b 20 13 Author manuscript, published in "Adsorption 10, 2 (2004) 159-185"

New Local Composition-Equation of State Mixing Rules for High Pressure Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Using EOS/AE
In this study using Equation of State/ Helmholtz excess energy function, EOS/AE, two new local composition-Equation-of State mixing rules, LCEOS1 and LCEOS2 were developed in which the energy interaction parameters were expressed in terms of attractive and repulsive parameters of the cubic equation of state. The EOS/AE models are applied for equilibrium calculation of nat...
متن کاملStudy of Methane Storage and Adsorption Equilibria in Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
Adsorbed natural gas has various advantages and is relatively more economical than liquefaction and compression. Carbon nanotubes can be introduced as a new candidate for natural gas storage. In this study, adsorption of methane was firstly studied on the as-prepared multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and then chemical and physical treatment of MWCNTs was performed to enhance the methane adsorp...

After a brief recall of the chromatographic principles, t h e different applications of gas chromatographic measurements of thermodynamic equilibria were reviewed. Gas and liquid chromatographies are now well known and elegant methods for measuring the physicochemical properties and phase equil ibrium thermodynamic constants. Although fundamentally a dynamical method and mostly known as a power...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of Adsorption Breakthrough Curves for CO2/CH4 Separation in a Fixed Bed of Nanoporous Shaped Copper Trimesate Metal Organic Framework
Copper trimesate (Cu-BTC) MOF has been pointed out as a promising adsorbent for separating carbon dioxide from methane. However, MOF’s need to be shaped prior to their use in packed bed adsorbers in order to reduce pressure drop; on the other hand, the production of mechanically resistant shaped bodies reduces their adsorption performance. In this work, Cu-BTC tablets provided by BASF are evalu...
