چکیده

Eleven eyes with lesions of the optic nerve and chiasm and 5 normal eyes were histologically studied and cells of the inner nuclear layer were counted in specific meridians. There was consistent decreased cellularity in the 9 eyes in tohich lesions of the optic nerve had been present for 2 years or longer. The probability that the decreased celhdarity occurred by chance ivas less than 0.02. Retrograde transsynaptic degeneration as the explanation for the degeneration in the inner nuclear layer is discussed. These case findings give statistical significance to the controversial concept of retrograde transsynaptic degeneration of the inner nuclear layer of the retina following lesions of the optic nerve.

Transsynaptic retinal degeneration in optic neuropathies: optical coherence tomography study.

PURPOSE Recently demonstrated neuronal loss in the inner nuclear layer of the retina in multiple sclerosis (MS) and glaucoma raises the question of a primary (possibly immune-mediated) or secondary (transsynaptic) mechanism of retinal damage in these diseases. In the present study we used optical coherence tomography to investigate retrograde retinal transsynaptic degeneration in patients with ...

Comparative Retina Stratification in Embryos, Larvae and Adults of Alburnus chalcoides

The present investigation considered retina structure in embryos, larvae and adult Alburnus chalcoides. Histological samples of retina were provided from adult fish, different stages of embryonic and larval development. Eye primordia formed from ectoderm at 16 hours after fertilization (16hAF) and then developed to eye cups. Initial eye cup which contained undifferentiated retina began to form ...

Progression of transsynaptic retinal degeneration with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography

PURPOSE To illustrate the progression of retrograde transsynaptic retinal degeneration using spectral- domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). OBSERVATIONS A 60 year-old man with a stroke was followed over a 17-month period using SD-OCT of the macula, ganglion cell layer (GCC), and retinal nerve fiber layer. Transsynaptic retinal degeneration progressed over this time. CONCLUSIONS AND...

Sir, it has been reported that microcysts from macular oedema occur in 4.7% of patients with multiple sclerosis (Gelfand et al., 2012). It is now evident that these microcysts do not represent oedema, nor is their occurrence a specific feature of demyelinating disease, because they have been identified in patients with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, Kjer's dominant optic atrophy, and opti...

Retinal pathology in multiple sclerosis: insight into the mechanisms of neuronal pathology.

Sir, We congratulate Calabresi et al. (2010) for the scientific commentary regarding retinal pathology in multiple sclerosis. The authors have excellently summarized the pathological mechanism in multiple sclerosis in the brain and retina. We would like to make a contribution to the retinal aspects of their comments. Full-field flash electroretinogram is the mass electrical activity of the reti...
