Case studies on the dynamics of Pi3 geomagnetic and riometer pulsations during auroral activations

چکیده
A sequence of three subsequent auroral activations (at 18:10, 19:48 and 20:00 UT) on 9 February 1997 is analysed. The brightenings of optical auroras were collocated with latitudinally localized bursts of pulsating riometer absorption and Pi3 geomagnetic pulsations. In two of the cases, the strongest westward directed electrojet currents and the footpoint of the upward directed field-aligned currents related to the auroral brightening were observed in the same region as the largest amplitude of the pulsations and their polarization changed. In the third case, field-aligned current signatures were present, but not so pronounced that their accurate location could not be defined. In all cases, the spectra of geomagnetic and absorption pulsations were similar. Based on ground-based observations alone, it is difficult to say whether the energetic particle precipitation (riometer absorption) was modulated by the geomagnetic pulsations or whether the geomagnetic pulsations were caused by varying ionospheric currents controlled by the precipitating particle intensity. However, the localized nature of both pulsations of the two different phenomena and their tight coupling with each other seem to support the latter option.

Unusual strong quasi-monochromatic ground Pc5 geomagnetic pulsations in the recovery phase of November 2003 superstorm
Unusually large-amplitude morning Pc5 magnetic pulsations during the recovery phase of the huge magnetic storm in November 2003 have been studied by using ground-based multi-point observations. Two main spectral Pc5 enhancements were observed: at f≈2 mHz, which featured slowly increasing frequency with decreasing latitude, and at f≈3 mHz, which was latitude independent. The Pc5 pulsations were ...
متن کاملPc5 modulation of high energy electron precipitation: particle interaction regions and scattering efficiency
Using the NORSTAR riometer and CANOPUS magnetometer arrays we have investigated the modulation of high energy electron precipitation by ULF waves in the Pc5 frequency band. We conducted two separate studies of Pc5 activity in the riometers. The first is an independent survey of three riometer stations in the Churchill line (one at each subauroral, auroral, and typical polar cap boundary latitud...
متن کاملCharacteristics of night-time absorption spike events
Sudden increases in cosmic radio noise absorption, known as spike events, have been identified as signatures of substorms in the previous studies. Using data from the IRIS (Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Studies) at Kilpisjärvi, Finland (L ∼6) more than 450 night-time spike events between 1994 and 2003 have been identified. Spike events fall into four distinct categories based on their struct...
متن کاملOccurrence and average behavior of pulsating aurora
Motivated by recent event studies and modeling efforts on pulsating aurora, which conclude that the precipitation energy during these events is high enough to cause significant chemical changes in the mesosphere, this study looks for the bulk behavior of auroral pulsations. Based on about 400 pulsating aurora events, we outline the typical duration, geomagnetic conditions, and change in the pea...
متن کاملObservations of the spatial structure of electron precipitation pulsations using an imaging riometer
Electron precipitation can be modulated by geomagnetic pulsation activity. This can be observed as pulsation of cosmic noise absorption as measured by riometers. Observations of such pulsations exhibiting field-line resonance and particle-driven characteristics using an imaging riometer are presented and the capability of the instrument to map their spatial structure is demonstrated. It is show...
