چکیده

The classical cardiovascular risk factors explain only a part of the increased macrovascular disease in subjects with type 2 diabetes (1). Reduction of the elastic properties of the aorta is an early marker of atherosclerosis, and it is diagnosed early in the course of type 2 diabetes (2). The detrimental effects of the classical risk factors on aortic distensibility are well known. However, the potential effect of some newer markers that have been proposed as risk factors for atherosclerosis, including increased plasma homocysteine (Hcy), high-sensitivity Creactive protein (hs-CRP), fibrinogen, and uric acid levels, increased white blood cell (WBC) count, and low plasma adiponectin levels on aortic distensibility, has not been studied so far. The present cross-sectional study deals with the effect of the classical and newer cardiovascular risk factors on aortic distensibility in subjects with and without type 2 diabetes.

Background and Aim: Despite previously shown relationship between the aortic atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease, the relationship between aortic distensibility and the presence, extent and composition of thoracic aortic plaques (TAP) is not widely assessed. We evaluated the relationship between aortic distensibility and the presence, extent and composition of TAP in current research. ...

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) in the Adiponectin Gene and Cardiovascular Disease

Dear Editor, The recent article by Mohammadzadeh et al.[1] on the latest issue of this Journal showed that the T allele +276G/T SNP of ADIPOQ gene is more associated with the increasing risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in subjects with type 2 diabetes. Adipocytes were described in myocardial tissue of CAD patients and their role recently discussed[2,3]. Susceptibility to CAD by polymorp...

Mixed Lineage Kinase Domain-Like Pseudokinase (MLKL) Gene Expression in Human Atherosclerosis with and without Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Background: MLKL, one of the main downstream components of the necroptosis or programmed necrosis has recently been demonstrated in advanced atherosclerotic lesions. However, its precise role in the atherosclerosis pathogenesis still requires more elucidation. Our study was set to delineate both the changes in peripheral MLKL gene expression and its influence on disease severity in atherosclero...

Carotid stiffness is associated with impairment of cognitive performance in individuals with and without type 2 diabetes. The Maastricht Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS There is increasing evidence linking arterial (mainly aortic) stiffness and type 2 diabetes, a risk factor for arterial stiffness, to cognitive impairment and dementia. However, data on carotid stiffness, which may be especially relevant for cognitive performance, are scarce, and few studies have addressed the interplay between arterial stiffness, type 2 diabetes, and cognit...
