Non-Separability and Substitutability

چکیده
The design and implementation of environmental policy often involves more than one pollutant, and must consider pollution as a byproduct of the production of marketable output. In this paper, we test the implicit assumption in the empirical literature that (1) production of marketable output, pollution, and abatement are separable, and (2) different pollutants can be abated separately. Using unique plant-level data in India, we reject the null hypotheses of separability between marketable output and pollutants, and between different pollutants. Firms must incur abatement costs for reducing pollution levels. In addition, complement and substitute relationships between water pollutants are demonstrated with statistical significance. Chapter 4 Elasticities of Substitution
This draft chapter, prepared for inclusion in the (prospective) Handbook of Production Economics, Vol. 1 (Theory), edited by Subash Ray, Robert Chambers, and Subal Kumbhakar, lays out the theoretical foundation of the measurement of the degree of substitutability among inputs utilized in a production process. It proceeds from the well-settled (Hicksian) notion of this measure for two inputs (ty...
متن کاملIntertemporal Risk Aversion – or – Wouldn ’ t it be Nice to Tell Whether Robinson Crusoe
The paper introduces a new notion of risk aversion that is independent of the good under observation and its measure scale. The representational framework builds on a time consistent combination of additive separability on certain consumption paths and the von Neumann & Morgenstern (1944) assumptions. In the one-commodity special case, the new notion of risk aversion closely relates to a disent...

متن کاملSingle Agents and the Set of Many-to-One Stable Matchings
Some properties of the set of many-to-one stable matchings for firms that have responsive preferences and quotas are not necessarily true when firms' preferences are substitutable. In particular, we provide examples in which firms have substitutable preferences but firms and workers may be ``single'' in one stable matching and matched in another one. We identify a set of axioms on firms' prefer...
متن کاملPrice volatility and risk with non-separability of preferences
This paper studies the relationship between the systematic risk of financial instruments and the volatility of their equilibrium prices in a two-period stochastic asset valuation model. Whereas there is no link between the relative risk of assets and their price volatility in standard representative-agent models with additively-separable preferences, in this model with nonseparable preferences ...
