Phonological Neighborhood Density in Native and Non-Native Word Production
نویسنده
چکیده
The role of phonological neighborhood density in lexical access was examined during nativeand nonnative language production. German-English and English-German bilinguals named pictures of German words with highand low-density neighborhoods. Results revealed that accuracy of picture naming was influenced by phonological neighborhood, with high-density neighborhoods facilitating lexical access in both the native and the non-native languages. However, latency of picture naming was facilitated by high-density phonological neighborhoods only in the non-native, but not the native, language. This suggests that native / nonnative language status mediates the effect of phonological neighborhood on the speed of lexical access. Implications for native and non-native language processing dynamics are discussed.

Phonological Neighborhood Density Guides: Lexical Access in Native and Non-Native Language Production
The human linguistic capacity is subject to multiple influences both within and outside the language system. Among the factors that have been found to have a particularly robust influence on efficiency of language processing is how similar or different a word is relative to other words. Similarities and differences among words can be examined at the phonological, orthographic, lexical, and sema...
متن کاملSensitivity to phonological similarity within and across languages.
The influence of phonological similarity on bilingual language processing was examined within and across languages in three experiments. Phonological similarity was manipulated within a language by varying neighborhood density, and across languages by varying extent of cross-linguistic overlap between native and non-native languages. In Experiment 1, speed and accuracy of bilinguals' picture na...
متن کاملLexical frequency and neighborhood density effects on the recognition of native and Spanish-accented words by native English and Spanish listeners.
This study examined the effect of presumed mismatches between speech input and the phonological representations of English words by native speakers of English (NE) and Spanish (NS). The English test words, which were produced by a NE speaker and a NS speaker, varied orthogonally in lexical frequency and neighborhood density and were presented to NE listeners and to NS listeners who differed in ...
متن کاملIntegrated Phonological Processing in Bilinguals: Evidence from Spoken Word Recognition
The role of cross-linguistic phonological overlap in native and non-native word recognition was examined using an auditory lexical decision task. The degree of phonological overlap across languages was manipulated. Cross-linguistic overlap facilitated word recognition in the non-native language, but inhibited word recognition in the native language. The observed facilitation and inhibition effe...
متن کاملInfluences on perceived foreign accentedness: Acoustic distances and lexical neighborhoods
We often encounter speakers with non-native accents who produce speech different from typical native productions [1]. Native listeners are sensitive to these deviations and the degree of deviation along acoustic variables has been shown to affect how native listeners assign accentedness ratings to nonnative speech [7]. Additionally, lexical variables may influence the perception of foreign acce...
