Abstract – The design, fabrication, and field testing of a 30.5cm robot capable of aerial and terrestrial locomotion is described. The Micro Air-Land Vehicle (MALV) flies using a chord-wise, undercambered, bat-like compliant fixed wing and walks over rough terrain using passively compliant wheel-leg running gear. The vehicle successfully performs transitions from flight to walking and in some situations, from walking to flight. The lightweight (~100g) carbon fiber vehicle flies, lands and crawls with a video sensor payload exceeding 20% its own mass. Index Terms – animal inspired locomotion mechanisms, micro air vehicles, legged robots, micro robots, flying and walking mobility

Biologically Inspired Micro-Flight Research

Natural fliers demonstrate a diverse array of flight capabilities, many of which are poorly understood. NASA has established a research project to explore and exploit flight technologies inspired by biological systems. One part of this project focuses on dynamic modeling and control of micro aerial vehicles that incorporate flexible wing structures inspired by natural fliers such as insects, hu...

Demonstration of an Aerial and Submersible Vehicle Capable of Flight and Underwater Navigation with Seamless Air-Water Transition

Bio-inspired vehicles are currently leading the way in the quest to produce a vehicle capable of flight and underwater navigation. However, a fully functional vehicle has not yet been realized. We present the first fully functional vehicle platform operating in air and underwater with seamless transition between both mediums. These unique capabilities combined with the hovering, high maneuverab...

Durability of a Hybrid Air-land Vehicle

A small hybrid vehicle has been developed and tested that is capable of flying, crawling, and transitioning between aerial and terrestrial locomotion modes. The Morphing Micro Air-Land Vehicle is a 16 inch wingspan craft proposed for advanced reconnaissance missions. Earlier versions of MMALV included several sources of low durability. Original prototypes relied on standard RC servos (modified ...

Synergistic Design of a Bio-Inspired Micro Aerial Vehicle with Articulated Wings

The sophisticated and intricate connection between bat morphology and flight capabilities makes it challenging to employ conventional flying robots to replicate the aerial locomotion of these creatures. In recent work, a bat inspired soft Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) called Bat Bot (B2) with five Degrees of Actuation (DoA) has been constructed to mimic the flight behavior of a biological bat. Maj...
