چکیده

Aims. We investigate the build-up of stellar mass through star formation in field galaxies, galaxy groups, and clusters in order to better understand the physical processes regulating star formation in different haloes. Methods. In order to do so we relate ongoing star formation activity to the stellar mass by studying the integrated specific star formation rate (SSFR), defined as the star-formation rate per unit stellar mass, as a function of integrated stellar mass for samples of field galaxies, groups of galaxies, and galaxy clusters at 0.18 ≤ z ≤ 0.85. The star formation rate (SFR) is derived from the ultraviolet continuum for the galaxies and group members, and from emission line fluxes for the cluster galaxies. The stellar masses are computed from multi-band photometry including the near-infrared bands for the galaxies and groups, and from the dynamical mass for the cluster sample. Results. For the first time, integrated SSFRs for clusters and groups are presented and related to the SSFRs of field galaxies. Tentatively, we find a continuous upper limit for galaxies, groups, and clusters in the SSFR-stellar mass plane over seven orders of magnitude in stellar mass. This might indicate that the physical processes which control star formation in dark matter haloes of different mass have the same scaling with mass over a wide range of masses from dwarf galaxies to massive clusters of galaxies.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Star formation in galaxies and star clusters

This thesis is devoted to star formation from galaxy-scales (≈ 10 000 pc) to sub-star cluster-scales (≈ 0.1 pc). I develop and test a new method to derive star formation histories of Galaxies from their star cluster content, in particular the most massive star clusters. This is followed by an application of this method to the Large Magellanic Cloud, where the results of this new method are conf...

IMF variations and their implications for Supernovae numbers

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) integrated over an entire galaxy is an integral over all separate star-formation events. Since most stars form in star clusters with different masses the integrated IMF becomes an integral of the (universal or invariant) canonical stellar IMF over the star-cluster mass function. This integrated IMF is steeper (contains fewer massive stars per Gtype star) ...

The Star Formation Histories of Local Galaxies: Continuous or Intermittent?

We explore a model in which efficient star formation in galaxies is triggered by merging satellites. We show that the merger/interaction rates predicted by hierarchical galaxy formation models depend strongly on galaxy mass. If a merger of a satellite larger than 1% the mass of the primary triggers efficient star formation, low-mass dwarf galaxies experience strong bursts separated by quiescent...
