Magnetic fields in young galaxies due to the cross-helicity effect

چکیده
It is shown that the cross-helicity effect facilitates rapid growth of the large scale magnetic field in young galaxies. This field then acts as a seed for the standard αΩ-type dynamo at later stages. This mechanism may be responsible for the relatively strong magnetic fields observed in young high redshift galaxies.

Is the Long-Term Persistency of Circular Polarisation due to the Constant Helicity of the Magnetic Fields in Rotating Quasar Engines?
Many compact radio sources like quasars, blazars, radio galaxies, and micro-quasars emit circular polarisation (CP) with surprising temporal persistent handedness. We propose that the CP is caused by Faraday conversion (FC) of linear polarisation (LP) synchrotron light which propagates along a line-of-sight (LOS) through helical magnetic fields. Jet outflows from radio galaxies should have the ...
متن کاملMagnetic helicity in galactic dynamos
Magnetic fields correlated on kiloparsec scales are seen in spiral galaxies. Their origin could be due to amplification of a small seed field by a turbulent galactic dynamo. We review the current status of the galactic dynamo, especially the constraints imposed by magnetic helicity conservation. We estimate the minimal strength of the large-scale magnetic field which could arise inspite of the ...
متن کاملSimulations of Galactic Dynamos
We review our current understanding of galactic dynamo theory, paying particular attention to numerical simulations both of the mean-field equations and the original three-dimensional equations relevant to describing the magnetic field evolution for a turbulent flow. We emphasize the theoretical difficulties in explaining non-axisymmetric magnetic fields in galaxies and discuss the observationa...
متن کاملMean Magnetic Field Generation in Sheared Rotators
A generalized mean magnetic field induction equation for differential rotators is derived, including a compressibility, and the anisotropy induced on the turbulent quantities from the mean magnetic field itself and a mean velocity shear. Derivations of the mean field equations often do not emphasize that there must be anisotropy and inhomogeneity in the turbulence for mean field growth. The ani...
