چکیده

Introduction Wildfires occur annually in Oregon, and the health risks of wildfire smoke are well documented1. Before implementing syndromic surveillance through Oregon ESSENCE, assessing the health effects of wildfires in real time was very challenging. Summer 2015 marked the first wildfire season with 60 of 60 eligible Oregon emergency departments (EDs) reporting to ESSENCE. The Oregon ESSENCE team developed a wildfire surveillance pilot project with two local public health authorities (LPHAs) to determine their surveillance needs and practices and developed a training program to increase capacity to conduct surveillance at the local level. Following the training, one of the LPHAs integrated syndromic surveillance into its routine surveillance practices. Oregon ESSENCE also integrated the evaluation findings into the summer 2016 statewide wildfire surveillance plan.

Forests and rangelands? wildfire risk zoning using GIS and AHP techniques

Wildfire in forests and rangelands, apart from its initiating causes, is considered as an ecological disaster. Zoning natural areas according to their susceptibility to fire helps to put off operations and reduces catastrophic losses caused through a wise management plan. In this study, the zoning map of wildfire risk in forest and rangeland areas has been produced using GIS, Analytical Hierarc...

Particulate Air Pollution from Wildfires in the Western US under Climate Change.

Wildfire can impose a direct impact on human health under climate change. While the potential impacts of climate change on wildfires and resulting air pollution have been studied, it is not known who will be most affected by the growing threat of wildfires. Identifying communities that will be most affected will inform development of fire management strategies and disaster preparedness programs...

Birth Weight following Pregnancy during the 2003 Southern California Wildfires

BACKGROUND In late October 2003, a series of wildfires exposed urban populations in Southern California to elevated levels of air pollution over several weeks. Previous research suggests that short-term hospital admissions for respiratory outcomes increased specifically as a result of these fires. OBJECTIVE We assessed the impact of a wildfire event during pregnancy on birth weight among term...

Health and Economic Impact of Wildfires: Literature Review

This review study synthesizes available literature in epidemiology, economics and wildfirerelated studies to provide essential information for the valuation of health costs associated with wildfire events. We review three areas within these literatures: key health outcomes to be evaluated, association between wildfire smoke and health outcomes, and valuation of health effects. We find that the ...
