چکیده

Dust particles charging in a stratified positive column of a low-pressure DC glow discharge was investigated theoretically. The presented model consists of (i) previously developed 1D selfconsistent model for discharge parameters on the tube axis; (ii) ambipolar approximation for radial electric potential distribution and the assumption that the electron energy distribution function in radial direction depends on the total electron energy only; (iii) orbital motion limited model for the processes of particle charging. For a probe particle, the 2D radial and axial charge distributions are obtained. It was shown that the particle charge strongly depends on the obtained non-Maxwellian electron energy distribution function and on the electric field distribution in the discharge tube. The obtained radial charge distribution is non-homogeneous that can lead to the complex motion of the particles, e.g., vortex motion of particles near the tube walls obtained in experiments.

Influence of Metastable Argon Atoms and Dust Particles on Gas Discharge Plasma

The model of a DC glow discharge with metastable argon atoms and dust particles based on the Boltzmann equation for the electron energy distribution function (EEDF), dust particle charging, and balance equation for metastable argon atoms is presented. The processes of direct and stepwise electron impact ionization, metastable-metastable collisions, and recombination of electrons and ions on the...

Dust Acoustic Waves

In dc glow discharge dusty plasmas, the formation of dust acoustic waves is a commonly observed phenomenon. Experiments in the dusty plasma experiment device produce naturally occurring dust acoustic waves with frequencies f N 5 to 25 Hz and phase velocities of Vph N 0.5 to 10 cm/s. Through the use of particle image velocimetry techniques, particle motion in the vicinity of the wavefronts is id...

Influence of dust particles on ionization and excitation in neon dc discharge

The influence of dust particles on the concentration of metastable neon atoms and ionization was investigated using the developed drift/diffusion model for plasma of positive column of glow discharge. The detailed de-excitation in neon was considered. In addition to usual plasma losses in dusty plasmas, the quenching of metastable atoms on dust particle surface was considered. The strong influe...

Comment on "Dependence of the dust-particle charge on its size in a glow-discharge plasma".

Measurements of the charge of dust grains have been performed in a quasineutral plasma over a wide range of grain sizes. A new method was established for measuring the charge on grains levitating in the striations of a dc glow discharge. A single dust particle is moved out of a dust cloud with the help of a focused laser beam. When it leaves the beam it returns back to the cloud, and the charge...

Nonlinear Dust Acoustic Waves, Shocks and Stationary Structures in a DC Glow Discharge Dusty Plasma

The dust acoustic wave (DAW) is a very low frequency (tens of Hz) dust density wave in which the dust particles participate in the wave dynamics. The early experimental observations of DAWs showed that the wave was self-excited by a modest relative ion drift and grew to very high amplitudes (~100%). In the first part of this paper we describe experiments showing the self-steepening of nonlinear...
