T h e facultative anaerobe Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast) represents a unique experimental system for studying the mechanisms governing mito-ehondrial formation. If grown aerobically on a nonfermentable carbon source, this organism contains numerous well-defined mitoehondria closely resembling those of mammalian eeUs (1-3).
