Five decades of invasion genetics

چکیده
In 1964, some of the most prominent scientists in the history of ecology and evolutionary biology met on the Pacific coast at Asilomar, California to discuss the genetics of colonizing species. Pointed (but polite) exchanges were recorded between ErnstMayr, G. Ledyard Stebbins, E. O. Wilson, Theodosius Dobzhansky, Richard Lewontin, JohnHarper, C.H.Waddington, R.W.Allard, Herbert Baker, and 21 others. The resulting symposium volume (Baker & Stebbins, 1965) became an enduring classic, still widely cited today by students of microevolution and invasion biology. The beach poppies (Eschscholzia californica) then flowered 50 times before invasion geneticists once again colonized the Asilomar dunes. At the behest of organizers Spencer Barrett, Rob Colautti, Katrina Dlugosch, and Loren Rieseberg, 74 participants from 12 countriesmet to celebrate the achievements of the remarkable 1964 group, and to assess the progressmade and the challenges remaining in the field of invasion genetics. Participants in the 1964 and 2014 symposia enthusiastically shared a conviction that invasions, range expansions, and colonization events provide unique windows on fundamental evolutionary processes.

Evaluation of miR-141, miR-200c, miR-30b Expression and Clinicopathological Features of Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer (BC) ranks the second most common genitourinary tract malignant tumor with high mortality and 70% recurrence rate worldwide. MiRNAs expression has noticeable role in bladder tumorigenesis. The purpose of this study was to assess miR-200c, miR-30b and miR-141 in tissue samples of patients with BC and healthy adjacent tissue samples and their association with muscle invasion, grade...
متن کاملAerial Parts of Peucedanum chenur Have Anti-Cancer Properties through the Induction of Apoptosis and Inhibition of Invasion in Human Colorectal Cancer Cells
Background: The Peucedanum species have many pharmacological effects due to the presence of coumarins, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and essential fatty acids in these species. In this study, for the first time, the anticancer activity of Peucedanum chenur methanolic extract via the induction of apoptosis and inhibition of invasion in HCT-116 human colon cancer cells was investigated. Methods...
متن کاملshRNA-mediated downregulation of α-N-Acetylgalactosaminidase inhibits migration and invasion of cancer cell lines
Objective(s): Extracellular matrix (ECM) is composed of many kinds of glycoproteins containing glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) moiety. The research was conducted based on the N-Acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) degradation of ECM components by α-N-acetylgalactosaminidase (Nagalase) which facilitates migration and invasion of cancer cells. This study aims to investigate the effects of Naga-shRNA downregula...
متن کاملEpithelial to mesenchymal transition concept in Cancer: Review article
Owing to this fact that most of the mortalities in cancers are as a result of metastasis, study on the involved pathways in metastasis including Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) would be so critical and important. Up to date, several extensive studies have been carried out to determine the correlation between EMT and cancer and their results have shown that the EMT plays pivotal role ...
متن کاملHybrid Dysgenesis in Drosophila simulans Associated with a Rapid Invasion of the P-Element.
In a classic example of the invasion of a species by a selfish genetic element, the P-element was horizontally transferred from a distantly related species into Drosophila melanogaster. Despite causing 'hybrid dysgenesis', a syndrome of abnormal phenotypes that include sterility, the P-element spread globally in the course of a few decades in D. melanogaster. Until recently, its sister species,...
