چکیده

Current research in the area of foreign-accented speech recognition focusses either on acoustic model adaptation or speakerdependent pronunciation variation modeling. In this paper both approaches are applied in parallel and in a speaker-independent fashion: the acoustic modeling part is based on a derived Hidden Markov Model (HMM) clustering algorithm and the lexicon adaptation is based on speakerindependent multiple pronunciation rules. The pronunciation rules are derived using phoneme-level pronunciation scores. Foreign-accented speech was simulated with Columbian Spanish and Spanish of Spain and the experiments showed an improved recognition performance for the acoustic modeling part and identical recognition results when adding pronunciation variants to the lexica. Both results are taken as indicators for an improved recognition performance when applied on real foreignaccented speech. The present limited availability of foreignaccented speech databases, however, clearly merits further investigations.

Fast accent identification and accented speech recognition

The performance of speech recognition systems degrades when speaker accent is diierent from that in the training set. Accent-independent or accent-dependent recognition both require collection of more training data. In this paper, we propose a faster accent classiica-tion approach using phoneme-class models. We also present our ndings in acoustic features sensitive to a Cantonese accent, and po...

Speaker-independent Factors Affecting Foreign Accent Perception

Previous research on the perception of foreign accent has largely focused on speaker-dependent factors such as Age of Learning and Length of Residence which are specific to an individual speaker. Factors that are independent of particular speakers and their language learning history have also been shown to affect perception of second language speech. The present study examined two speaker-indep...

Foreign accent strength and listener familiarity with an accent codetermine speed of perceptual adaptation.

We investigated how the strength of a foreign accent and varying types of experience with foreign-accented speech influence the recognition of accented words. In Experiment 1, native Dutch listeners with limited or extensive prior experience with German-accented Dutch completed a cross-modal priming experiment with strongly, medium, and weakly accented words. Participants with limited experienc...

Tolerance for inconsistency in foreign-accented speech.

Are listeners able to adapt to a foreign-accented speaker who has, as is often the case, an inconsistent accent? Two groups of native Dutch listeners participated in a cross-modal priming experiment, either in a consistent-accent condition (German-accented items only) or in an inconsistent-accent condition (German-accented and nativelike pronunciations intermixed). The experimental words were i...

Foreign-accented speaker-independent speech recognition

This research investigated whether acoustic-phonetic knowledge of the mother tongue of a non-native speaker can be used to adapt an existing target language phoneme HMM recognizer. For this purpose three sets of phoneme HMMs were generated, one representing the target language (German), one the mother tongue of the non-native speaker (Turkish), and the third the foreign-accented pronunciation o...
