چکیده

Whereas many natural language researchers have identiied ways in which natural language systems need to be augmented in order to make current natural language interactions more natural, most evaluations of natural language interfaces have failed to study natural language in the context of its use. Since there are now restricted natural language systems available commercially, we feel that it is critical to identify whether in fact these systems are of beneet to end-users and what beneets these limited natural language systems ooer. In this study, we have evaluated a restricted NL as an interface for database access , and compared it with another type of database interface medium, provided by a menu system. We feel that this is an important component of this study: evaluation cannot done in a vacuum, since for most information access applications there will be other types of interfaces available. We identiied a group of users who made persistent use of the Natural Language system. It seemed that they were exploiting the fact that it allowed them to retrieve information at various levels of granularity, often by the use of coordinating expressions. They also seemed to take advantage of the increased exibility of expression provided by the NL interface, exempliied by the use of ellipsis, and the capacity to vary the presentation of output. We also analysed the learnability of a restricted subset of Natural Language by examining the errors of both persistent and non-persistent users of the system. We discuss the implications of this analysis for determining those features of applications that make NL a suitable interface. We also comment on how users of NL systems might best be trained.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Tutorial Dialogue System for Self-Explanation

Previous research has shown that self-explanation can be supported effectively in an intelligent tutoring system by simple means such as menus. We now focus on the hypothesis that natural language dialogue is an even more effective way to support self-explanation. We have developed the Geometry Explanation Tutor, which helps students to state explanations of their problemsolving steps in their ...

Corpus based coreference resolution for Farsi text

"Coreference resolution" or "finding all expressions that refer to the same entity" in a text, is one of the important requirements in natural language processing. Two words are coreference when both refer to a single entity in the text or the real world. So the main task of coreference resolution systems is to identify terms that refer to a unique entity. A coreference resolution tool could be...

Menu Choice Translation -a flexible menu-based controlled natural language system -

This paper describes an experiment in controlled natural language interface technology. The system under work ensures a syntactic and semantic correct composition of input sentences, without restricting the user too much. The lexicon as well as the syntactic and semantic restrictions are maintained in flexible structures which can be updated at any time. The application of the system at present...

The More the Better? Characteristics and Efficiency of 401(k) Investment Menus

Few previous studies have explored whether defined contribution retirement saving plans offer sufficiently diversified investment menus, though it is likely that these menus significantly shape workers’ accumulations of retirement wealth. This paper assesses the efficiency and performance of 401(k) investment options offered by a large group of US employers. We show that the majority of plans i...
