The Next Generation Sky Survey and the Quest for Cooler Brown Dwarfs
نویسنده
چکیده
The Next Generation Sky Survey (NGSS) is a proposed NASA MIDEX mission to map the entire sky in four infrared bandpasses – 3.5, 4.7, 12, and 23 µm. The seven-month mission will use a 50-cm telescope and four-channel imager to survey the sky from a circular orbit above the Earth. Expected sensitivities will be half a million times that of COBE/DIRBE at 3.5 and 4.7 µm and a thousand times that of IRAS at 12 and 23 µm. NGSS will be particularly sensitive to brown dwarfs cooler than those presently known. Deep absorption in the methane fundamental band at 3.3 µm and a predicted 5-µm overluminosity will produce uniquely red 3.5-to-4.7 µm colors for such objects. For a limiting volume of 25 pc, NGSS will completely inventory the Solar Neighborhood for brown dwarfs as cool as Gl 229B. At 10 pc, the census will be complete to 500 K. Assuming a field mass function with α = 1, there could be one or more brown dwarfs warmer than 150 K lying closer to the Sun than Proxima Centauri and detectable primarily at NGSS wavelengths. NGSS will enable estimates of the brown dwarf mass and luminosity functions to very cool temperatures and will provide both astrometric references and science targets for NGST.

The 2mass Wide-field T Dwarf Search. Iv. Hunting out T Dwarfs with Methane Imaging
We present first results from a major program of methane filter photometry for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. The definition of a new methane filter photometric system is described. A recipe is provided for the differential calibration of methane imaging data using existing TwoMicron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometry. We show that these filters are effective in discriminating T dwarfs from ot...

The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey is a set of five surveys of complementary combinations of area, depth, and Galactic latitude, which began in 2005 May. The surveys use the UKIRT Wide Field Camera (WFCAM), which has a solid angle of 0.21deg. Here we introduce and characterise the ZY JHK photometric system of the camera, which covers the wavelength range 0.83 − 2.37μm. We synthesise response fu...

We present the discovery of two brown dwarfs in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Deep Extragalactic Survey (DXS) Data Release 2. Both objects were selected photometrically from six square degrees in DXS for their blue J − K colour and the lack of optical counterparts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. Additional optical photometry provided by the Canada-France-Hawaii T...
متن کاملA 2MASS Survey for Brown Dwarfs Towards the Hyades
We present results of a search for very low mass stars and brown dwarfs towards the central region of the Hyades cluster. Using Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) near-infrared and Second Palomar Sky Survey (POSSII) optical photometry, we select candidates corresponding to spectral types M8 through L4 at the distance of the Hyades. Spectroscopic followup data indicate that none are cluster membe...

The 2-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) (Epchtein et al. 1994) and the DEep Near Infrared Survey of the southern sky (DENIS) Skrutskie et al. 1997) have revealed a heretofore unknown population of free brown dwarfs that has extended the local mass function down to as small as 0.01M ⊙ (Reid et al. 1999). If this local proportion of brown dwarfs extends throughout the Galaxy—in particular in the Gala...
