چکیده

The possible presence of thermal components in the early X-ray afterglows of γ-ray bursts is investigated. We discuss both the presence of a thermal continuum and, in particular, of collisional X-ray emission lines. We compute the predicted luminosity by a thin plasma for a range of metallicities for the continuum and the Kα lines of the elements Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca and Fe. We show that light travel effects are dominant in the determination of the thermal continuum and line luminosities, and derive the relevant equations. We conclude that thermal lines and continua are unlikely to dominate the early afterglow of GRBs, unless the explosion site is surrounded by a very massive and extremely clumped shell of material. Such conditions are difficult to envisage in the close environment of GRB progenitor, unless they are excited by some strong precursor activity, like in the

Can the Bump Be Observed in the Early Afterglow of Grbs with X-ray Line Emission Features?

Extremely powerful emission lines are observed in the X-ray afterglow of several GRBs. The energy contained in the illuminating continuum which is responsible for the line production exceeds 10 erg, much higher than that of the collimated GRBs. It constrains the models which explain the production of X-ray emission lines. In this paper, We argue that this energy can come from a continuous postb...

Physical Processes Shaping Gamma-ray Burst X-ray Afterglow Light Curves: Theoretical Implications from the Swift X-ray Telescope Observations

With the successful launch of the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer, a rich trove of early X-ray afterglow data has been collected by its onboard X-Ray Telescope (XRT). Some interesting features are emerging, including a distinct rapidly decaying component preceding the conventional afterglow component in many sources, a shallow decay component before the more ‘‘normal’’ decay component observed i...

According to the internal-external shocks model for γ-ray bursts (GRBs), the GRB is produced by internal shocks within a relativistic flow while the afterglow is produced by external shocks with the ISM. We explore the early afterglow emission. For short GRBs the peak of the afterglow will be delayed, typically, by few dozens of seconds after the burst. For long GRBs the early afterglow emissio...

Observational Prospects for Afterglows of Short Duration Gamma-ray Bursts

If the efficiency for producing γ-rays is the same in short duration (<∼ 2 s) Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) as in long duration GRBs, then the average kinetic energy of short GRBs must be ∼ 20 times less than that of long GRBs. Assuming further that the relativistic shocks in short and long duration GRBs have similar parameters, we show that the afterglows of short GRBs will be on average 10–40 times...
