A Comparison of Alternative Methods for Prioritizing Buffer Placement in Agricultural Watersheds for Water Quality Improvement

چکیده

Two methods have been developed for identifying locations in watersheds where vegetative buffers would yield greater benefit for reducing agricultural nonpoint source pollution. The methods were compared and contrasted to evaluate the degree to which they identified the same or different locations within a watershed. The two methods included the terrain analysis-based topographic index, TI, (Qiu, 2009) and three soil survey-based indexes, STE, WTE, and GI (Dosskey et al. 2006). Both methods were applied to agricultural land in the 144 km Neshanic River watershed in New Jersey. Results showed that each index associated higher pollution risk and mitigation potential to a different part of the landscape: TI to sites having larger contributing area and lower slope with coarser shallower soil; WTE to sites having lower slope with coarser soil; and STE to sites having steeper slope with finer-textured soil. TI typically identifies riparian zones and swales that are prone to saturate and generate overland runoff. The STE and WTE identify sites where conditions are better for a buffer to trap pollutants in infiltration-excess runoff from up-gradient fields. Both TI and GI ostensibly identify sites where a shallow water table is more likely to occur, but correspondence between these two indexes was only modest. There is strong potential for the complementary use of these indexes. First, terrain analysis could be used to improve STE and WTE indexes by providing site-specific slope information and by enabling adjustment for spatial variation in runoff contributing area. Second, each index identifies sites that have high pollution mitigation potential, but for different reasons. Vegetative buffers could be apportioned among the different index-identified sites in a way that treats those most promising locations to mitigate pollutant loading to the Neshanic River.

On optimal placement of best management practices in agricultural watersheds

This article presents analysis and synthesis of findings concerning the problem of costeffective placement of best management practices (BMPs) emerging from NIFA CEAP and the USDA NRCS jointly-funded competitive grant projects, and future research needs. The synthesis focuses on two fundamental aspects of the cost-effectiveness problem: (1) how to assess the locationand farmer-specific costs of...

Prioritization of Erosion Prone Sub-Watersheds using MCDM Methods in Roudzard Watershed, Khuzestan Province

Soil erosion has been one of the most important problems of watersheds in the world and is considered one of the main obstacles to achieving sustainable development in agriculture and natural resources. Identifying and prioritizing regions sensitive to soil erosion is essential for water and soil conservation and natural resource management in watersheds. The present research was performed in 2...

Model for Prioritizing Best Management Practice Implementation: Sediment Load Reduction

Understanding the best way to allocate limited resources is a constant challenge for water quality improvement efforts. The synoptic approach is a tool for geographic prioritization of these efforts. It uses a benefit-cost framework to calculate indices for functional criteria in subunits (watersheds, counties) of a region and then rank the subunits. The synoptic approach was specifically desig...

Spatial Optimization of Six Conservation Practices Using Swat in Tile-drained Agricultural Watersheds

Targeting of agricultural conservation practices to the most effective locations in a watershed can promote wise use of conservation funds to protect surface waters from agricultural nonpoint source pollution. A spatial optimization procedure using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool was used to target six widely used conservation practices, namely no-tillage, cereal rye cover crops (CC), filter...

Improved indexes for targeting placement of buffers of Hortonian runoff

Targeting specific locations within agricultural watersheds for installing vegetative buffers has been advocated as a way to enhance the impact of buffers and buffer programs on stream water quality. Existing models for targeting buffers of Hortonian, or infiltration-excess, runoff are not well developed. The objective was to improve on an existing soil survey–based approach that would provide ...
