Effects of large horizontal winds on the equatorial electrojet

چکیده
The effects of large winds on the low-latitude E region ionosphere and the equatorial electrojet in particular are analyzed theoretically, computationally, and experimentally. The principles that govern the relationship between electric fields, currents, and winds in steady flows in the ionosphere are reviewed formally. A three-dimensional numerical model of low latitude ionospheric electrostatic potential is then described. Scaled wind profiles generated by the NCAR TIMEGCM are used as inputs for the potential model. The model shows that the horizontal wind component drastically modifies the vertical polarization electric field in the electrojet and drives strong zonal and meridional currents at higher dip latitudes outside the electrojet region. Comparison between the model output and coherent scatter radar observations of plasma irregularities in the electrojet indicate that strong winds and wind shears are present in the E region over Jicamarca that are roughly consistent with NCAR model wind predictions if the amplitudes of the latter are increased by about 50%.

Improved horizontal wind model HWM07 enables estimation of equatorial ionospheric electric fields from satellite magnetic measurements
[1] Horizontal neutral winds play an important role in lowlatitude ionospheric E and F-region dynamics. In particular, the zonal winds have strong effects on the local structure of the low-latitude ionospheric current system. Accurate wind specification is therefore essential for modeling these currents. In order to investigate the retrieval of eastward electric fields from satellite-derived eq...
متن کاملUp-down asymmetry of type I plasma waves in the equatorial electrojet region
The up-down asymmetry of the type I plasma waves in the equatorial electrojet region during daytime is investigated. It is shown that the asymmetry is exhibited not only in the vertical direction but also is manifested in the oblique direction (24.6° o zenith). The results further indicate the eect of neutral winds on the phase velocities of type I plasma waves.

Huancayo is the only equatorial electrojet station where the daytime increase of horizontal geomagnetic ®eld (H) is associated with a simultaneous increase of eastward geomagnetic ®eld (Y). It is shown that during the counter electrojet period when DH is negative, DY also becomes negative. Thus, the diurnal variation of DY at equatorial latitudes is suggested to be a constituent part of the equ...
متن کاملElectric fields and zonal winds in the equatorial ionosphere inferred from CHAMP satellite magnetic measurements
[1] The Equatorial Electrojet (EEJ) produces a strong magnetic signal in measurements of the low-orbiting CHAMP satellite. Six years of data with more than 30,000 dayside equator crossings provide a unique data basis to study this current system. In addition to scalar measurements used in previous studies, we have also inverted vector magnetic field measurements to gain accurate meridional prof...
متن کاملEvidence and effects of a wave-driven nonlinear current in the equatorial electrojet
Ionospheric two-stream waves and gradient-drift waves nonlinearly drive a large-scale (D.C.) current in the E-region ionosphere. This current flows parallel to, and with a comparable magnitude to, the fundamental Pedersen current. Evidence for the existence and magnitude of wave-driven currents derives from a theoretical understanding of E region waves, supported by a series of nonlinear 2-D si...
