چکیده

In this paper we introduce CoPilot, an active driving aid that enables semiautonomous, cooperative navigation of an electric powered wheelchair (EPW) for automated doorway detection and traversal. The system has been cleanly integrated into a commercially available EPW, and demonstrated with both joystick and head array interfaces. Leveraging the latest in 3D perception systems, we developed both feature and histogram-based approaches to the doorway detection problem. When coupled with a sample-based planner, success rates for automated doorway traversal approaching 100% were achieved.

Modular and Adaptive Wheelchair Automation

We present in this paper a novel framework for the design of a modular and adaptive partial-automation wheelchair. Our design in particular aims to address hurdles to the adoption of partial-automation wheelchairs within general society. In this experimental work, a single assistance module (assisted doorway traversal) is evaluated, with arbitration between multiple goals (from multiple detecte...

Research on autonomous robotic wheelchairs in Europe [Guest Editorial]

Autonomous Robotic Wheelchairs in Europe by Spyros G. Tzafestas (National Technical University of Athens) Autonomous robotic wheelchairs (ARWs) represent an important class of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) [1-3] that is receiving increasing attention all over the world. This is due to the strong need of easier wheelchair mobility throughout a longer average life of the handicapped. In the Eur...

Neural Network with Variable Type Connection Weights for Autonomous Obstacle Avoidance on a Prototype of Six-wheel Type Intelligent Wheelchair

In this paper, an assist method for human operation of electric-powered wheelchairs is studied. The purpose of this research is to make powered wheelchairs intelligent and to realize a mobility aid for people, who find it difficult or impossible to drive a conventional wheelchair. On a prototype of our group, a neural network produces an obstacle avoidance function. In this research, by the app...

Concept and Design of the Intellwheels Platform for Developing Intelligent Wheelchairs

Many people with severe disabilities find it difficult or even impossible to use traditional powered wheelchairs independently by manually controlling these electrical devices. Intelligent wheelchairs are a very good solution to assist severely handicapped people who are unable to operate classical electrical wheelchair by themselves in their daily activities. This paper describes a development...

Vibration-based Terrain Classification for Electric Powered Wheelchairs

Automated terrain classification for electric powered wheelchairs (EPWs) has two primary motivations. First, certain terrains (e.g., sand and gravel) make wheelchair mobility more difficult. To alleviate this problem the wheelchair control system can be manually tuned for maximum speeds and/or accelerations to help adapt to various terrains. Terrain classification can then be used to automate t...
