A Second Order Smooth Variational Principle on Riemannian Manifolds
We establish a second order smooth variational principle valid for functions defined on (possibly infinite-dimensional) Riemannian manifolds which are uniformly locally convex and have a strictly positive injectivity radius and bounded sectional curvature.

A manifold with a smooth action of a Lie group G is called G-manifold. In this paper we consider a complete Riemannian manifold M with the action of a closed and connected Lie subgroup G of the isometries. The dimension of the orbit space is called the cohomogeneity of the action. Manifolds having actions of cohomogeneity zero are called homogeneous. A classic theorem about Riemannian manifolds...
متن کاملStochastic sub-Riemannian geodesics on the Grushin distribution
Recent years have seen intensive scientific activities of describing diffusion processes with Brownian covariance given by a Riemannian metric on a manifold. In our paper the dynamics is specified through a stochastic variational principle for a generalization of the classical action, with a given kinetic Riemannian metric. In short, we introduce the concept of stochastic sub-Riemannian geodesi...
متن کاملOrthogonal Geodesic Chords, Brake Orbits and Homoclinic Orbits in Riemannian Manifolds
The study of solutions with fixed energy of certain classes of Lagrangian (or Hamiltonian) systems is reduced, via the classical Maupertuis–Jacobi variational principle, to the study of geodesics in Riemannian manifolds. We are interested in investigating the problem of existence of brake orbits and homoclinic orbits, in which case the Maupertuis– Jacobi principle produces a Riemannian manifold...
متن کاملLagrangian Navier-stokes Diffusions on Manifolds: Variational Principle and Stability
We prove a variational principle for stochastic flows on manifolds. It extends V. Arnold’s description of Lagrangian Euler flows, which are geodesics for the L2 metric on the manifold, to the stochastic case. Here we obtain stochastic Lagrangian flows with mean velocity (drift) satisfying the NavierStokes equations. We study the stability properties of such trajectories as well as the evolution...
