Safety and efficacy of a sublingual-oral desensitization protocol in cow’s milk allergy treatment

چکیده
Background Food allergies have become more prevalent and long lasting over the past two decades, namely cow’s milk allergy (CMA). Standard management for this disease is based on allergen avoidance and symptomatic treatment of accidental allergic reactions. The possibility of obtaining oral desensitization in patients with food allergy is still a mater of debate but seems to be a promising specific approach to modify the prognosis.

The basophil activation test (BAT) has proven to be a useful tool for the diagnosis of IgE-mediated food allergy and the evaluation of clinical tolerance in food allergic patients. Until now, successful oral desensitization to food allergen has been correlated with changes in cytokine production (IL-4 and INF-g) and allergenspecific IgE and IgG4 antibodies. We report a case of a 12-year-old mal...
متن کاملOral and sublingual immunotherapy for food allergy
OBJECTIVE Food allergies continue to be an increasingly common disorder, however, no treatment strategies are currently approved for the routine management of individuals with food allergies. Encouraging results from early open-label studies have sparked great interest in oral and sublingual immunotherapy, and thus several randomized controlled trials have recently been conducted to establish t...

Background: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is the most common food allergy during the first year of life. Strict avoidance of specific foods is the only accepted treatment for food-induced allergic reactions. This is often an unrealistic therapeutic option, since cow's milk is a basic food that is extensively used in infant formula. The recent preliminary experience of oral desensitization t...

Persistence of CMP allergy in the 4 weeks before tolerance induction was based on positive skin and serum testing and a positive double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge to cow’s milk.
