Positive and Negative Part / Whole Transfer in Free Recall 1

چکیده

Three experiments examined the effects of simultaneous and successive presentation on part/whole transfer in free recall. In the first two experiments, Ss received six or eight trials on the part list. The observed absence of negative transfer under any presentation condition was attributed to the fact that part-list subjective organization did not increase over reals. In Experiment III Ss received 16 trials on both lists and the groups represented all possible combinations of simultaneous or successive presentation on part and whole lists. Part-list subjective organization increased with practice in all conditions. Negative part-to-whole transfer was observed only when both part and whole lists were presented successively, suggesting that learning strategies determine whether or not part-list organization will interfere with whole-list learning.

Organiza t ion as a De te rminan t of Par t - to -Whole Transfer Recall

Tulving (1966) reported part-to-whole negative transfer in free recall on unrelated words, suggesting that the subjective organization induced by the part list persevered and was nonoptimal for the whole list. The present study first replicated Tulving's result with singleword presentations, finding too that Ss clustered their whole-list recall according to old vs. new items (suggesting perseve...

Effect of variability of combined practice (physical and positive self-modeling) on memory reconsolidation and motor skill transfer in children

In this study we manipulate structure of combined practice (physical along with self-modeling of positive self-review) to examine its effects on motor memory reconsolidation process and motor transfer in children. 36 female students (9-12 years old) from Maktabi elementary school of Qom trained Dart throwing. Of the 15 trials (from 1.5, 2, and 2.5 meters in blocked order), Positive self-re...

سوگیری حافظه ناآشکار و آشکار در افراد افسرده بر اساس پردازش انتقال مناسب

The aim of the present research was to examine implicit and explicit memory bias in depressed individuals based on the Transfer Appropriate Processing (TAP) framework. For this purpose, 60 participants (30 outpatient depressed participants for the experimental group and 30 non-depressed participants for the control group) were selected as research sample based on psychiatric interviews of DSM-I...

Distinct neural systems underlying reduced emotional enhancement for positive and negative stimuli in early Alzheimer's disease

Emotional information is typically better remembered than neutral content, and previous studies suggest that this effect is subserved particularly by the amygdala together with its interactions with the hippocampus. However, it is not known whether amygdala damage affects emotional memory performance at immediate and delayed recall, and whether its involvement is modulated by stimulus valence. ...

Regional gray matter correlates of memory for emotion-laden words in middle-aged and older adults: A voxel-based morphometry study

Emotional content is known to enhance memory in a content-dependent manner in healthy populations. In middle-aged and older adults, a reduced preference for negative material, or even an enhanced preference for positive material has been observed. This preference seems to be modulated by the emotional arousal that the material evokes. The neuroanatomical basis for emotional memory processes is,...
