چکیده

The cingulum bundle is a complex white matter fiber tract of the human brain that comprises long association fibers, commissural fibers, and various U-fibers. It is located above the corpus callosum and interconnects limbic structures. A decline of the cingulum fiber integrity has been observed in patients with mental disorders such as schizophrenia. In this work a separation of the bi-hemispheric lateral longitudinal striae and selected U-fibers was achieved by fiber tractography of the cingulum bundle based on diffusion tensor imaging at 1.8 mm isotropic spatial resolution. Anatomic accuracy without susceptibility-induced distortions was ensured by diffusion-weighted single-shot STEAM MRI with 24 gradient directions and b values of 0 and 1000 s mm -2 . Extending earlier versions, the STEAM sequence combined variable flip angles, centrically reordered phase encoding, partial Fourier encoding, and parallel

DTI and MTR abnormalities in schizophrenia: analysis of white matter integrity.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies in schizophrenia demonstrate lower anisotropic diffusion within white matter due either to loss of coherence of white matter fiber tracts, to changes in the number and/or density of interconnecting fiber tracts, or to changes in myelination, although methodology as well as localization of such changes differ between studies. The aim of this study is to loc...

Fuzzy Nonparametric DTI Segmentation for Robust Cingulum-Tract Extraction

This paper presents a novel segmentation-based approach for fiber-tract extraction in diffusion-tensor (DT) images. Typical tractography methods, incorporating thresholds on fractional anisotropy and fiber curvature to terminate tracking, can face serious problems arising from partial voluming and noise. For these reasons, tractography often fails to extract thin tracts with sharp changes in or...

Quantitative evaluation of changes in the selected white matter tracts using diffusion tensor imaging in patients with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment.

This study evaluated the damage to the extensive range of white matter tracts in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Thirty-four patients with AD (mean age 71.5 yrs, MMSE 17.6), 23 patients with MCI (mean age 66 yrs, MMSE 27.4) and 15 normal controls (mean age 69 yrs, MMSE 29.8) were enrolled. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed in 25 directions ...

Partial volume effect as a hidden covariate in DTI analyses

During the last decade, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been used extensively to investigate microstructural properties of white matter fiber pathways. In many of these DTI-based studies, fiber tractography has been used to infer relationships between bundle-specific mean DTI metrics and measures-of-interest (e.g., when studying diffusion changes related to age, cognitive performance, etc.) ...

Asymmetry analysis of cingulum based on scale-invariant parameterization by diffusion tensor imaging.

Current analysis of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is based mostly on a region of interest (ROI) in an image dataset, which is specified by users. This method is not always reliable, however, because of the uncertainty of manual specification. We introduce an improved fiber-based scheme rather than an ROI-based analysis to study in DTI datasets of 31 normal subjects the asymmetry of the cingulu...
