Magnitude of crustal extension across the northern Basin and Range province: constraints from paleomagnetism
ثبت نشده
چکیده
The magnitude of crustal extension across the northern Basin and Range province is a matter of longstanding controversy; estimates range from 10 to 3009~,. Recently published estimates of extension across the southern Basin and Range province (36°N) are in the range of 80-100%. Thus, the larger values suggested for the northern part of the province (40°N) seem to require substantial counterclockwise rotation of the Sierra Nevada during 'l-ertiary extension. Paleomagnetic data from the range, however, limit rotation to 4 + 10 ° at the 95~ confidence level. These limits. combined with estimates of extension near the Garlock fault, allow severe constraints to be placed on the magnitude of extension across more northerly parts of the province. We conclude that the maximum extension at 40°N is about 50%. and that values of 39 512q~ (188 + 43 km) are likely.

The Basin and Range Province
The Basin and Range province is a broad, highly extended terrane embedded within the North Ameri-can western Cordillera that extends from Canada, through the western United States, and across much of Mexico. The province roughly occupies the space between the Cascade Ranges and Rocky Mountains in the north and the Sierra Nevada and the Colorado Plateau in the middle, and it engulfs the Sierra M...
متن کاملContemporary strain rates in the northern Basin and Range province from GPS data
[1] We investigate the distribution of active deformation in the northern Basin and Range province using data from continuous GPS (CGPS) networks, supplemented by additional campaign data from the Death Valley, northern Basin and Range, and Sierra Nevada–Great Valley regions. To understand the contemporary strain rate field in the context of the greater Pacific (P)–North America (NA) plate boun...
متن کاملCrustal Thickness Variations in Southern California from Los Angeles Region Seismic Experiment Passive Phase Teleseismic Travel Times
The goal of the 1993 Los Angeles Region Seismic Experiment (LARSE93) passive phase was to collect waveform data from local and distant earthquakes to study lower crust and upper mantle structural features in southern California, particularly under the San Gabriel Mountains and San Andreas fault. During LARSE93, approximately 88 stations were deployed in a 175-km-long, linear array across the Lo...

[1] Global Positioning System (GPS) data collected in campaigns in 2000 and 2004 were processed and interpreted with other GPS data in the western Basin and Range province to provide new constraints on the rate, style, and pattern of deformation of the central and northern Walker Lane (WL), which lies near the western boundary of the Basin and Range. Across the central WL, near 38 N latitude, t...
متن کاملEarly-stage rifting of the northern Tyrrhenian Sea Basin: Results from a combined wide-angle and multichannel seismic study
[1] Extension of the continental lithosphere leads to the formation of rift basins and ultimately may create passive continental margins. The mechanisms that operate during the early stage of crustal extension are still intensely debated. We present the results from coincident multichannel seismic and wide-angle seismic profiles that transect across the northern Tyrrhenian Sea Basin. The profil...
