Morpheme frequency effects for derived words (e.g. an influence of the frequency of the base ‘‘dark” on responses to ‘‘darkness”) have been interpreted as evidence of morphemic representation. However, it has been suggested that most derived words would not show these effects if family size (a type frequency count claimed to reflect semantic relationships between whole forms) were controlled. This study used visual lexical decision experiments with correlational designs to compare the influences of base morpheme frequency and family size on response times to derived words in English and to test for interactions of these variables with suffix productivity. Multiple regression showed that base morpheme frequency and family size were independent predictors of response times to derived words. Base morpheme frequency facilitated responses but only to productively suffixed derived words, whereas family size facilitated responses irrespective of productivity. This suggests that base morpheme frequency effects are independent of morpheme family size, depend on suffix productivity and indicate that productively suffixed words are represented as morphemes. 2010 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Iranian EFL Learners' Processing of English Derived Words

An interesting area of psycholinguistic inquiry is to discover the way morphological structures are stored in the human mind and how they are retrieved during comprehension or production of language. The current study probed into what goes on in the mind of EFL learners when processing derivational morphology and how English and Persian derivational suffixes are processed. 60 Iranian EFL learne...

The Form and Content of Derivational Relations

Morpheme based theories of word structure encourage us to think of derived words (e.g. \innatable") as built by adding one complex of phonological, syntactic and semantic content (/{bl j /, Adjective, `able to be verbed') to another (/innejt/, Verb | +NP]], `inflate'). This model lacks generality in a number of ways, however. (a) Derivational relationships may not involve the simple addition of...

Bound Morpheme Frequencies in the Performance of Iranian English Language Undergraduates and English Language Materials Developers in Written Descriptive Tasks

This mini-corpus, cross-linguistic, comparative, and norm-referenced study intends to render the most frequently and oft-used affixes in the written descriptive tasks in the performance of English language materials developers (ELMDs) and Iranian English language undergraduates (IELUs). Samples of writings of both groups were studied and analyzed through affixation principles. The frequency of ...

Towards a Malay Derivational Lexicon: Learning Affixes Using Expectation Maximization

We propose an unsupervised training method to guide the learning of Malay derivational morphology from a set of morphological segmentations produced by a naı̈ve morphological analyzer. Using a morphology-based language model, we first estimate the probability of a given segmentation. We train the model with EM to find the segmentation that maximizes the probability of each morpheme. We extract t...

Morphosemantic relations between verbs in Croatian WordNet

This paper deals with morphosemantic relations between Croatian verbs and discusses their inclusion in Croatian WordNet. Morphosemantic relations refer to semantic relations between morphologically related verbs, i.e., between verbs from the same derivational family. A derivational family consists of verbs with the same lexical morpheme grouped around a base form. Generally, a verb with the sim...
