چکیده

JAVMA, Vol 233, No. 4, August 15, 2008 G is a highly contagious bacterial disease of horses, mules, and donkeys that is characterized by respiratory, cutaneous, and lymphatic nodular lesions. The disease is zoonotic, affecting persons in close contact with infected animals or those working with the organism in laboratory settings. Once prevalent worldwide, glanders has been eradicated from most countries; however, focal outbreaks do still occur. Burkholderia mallei, the causative organism of glanders, is considered a potential bioterrorism agent and has been used historically for this purpose. Control and prevention measures for glanders involve evaluation of susceptible equids, quarantine measures, depopulation of infected animals, and disinfection of premises and equipment. Awareness of the disease and collaboration between veterinary and human health professionals is essential for the early detection and protection of equids and humans.

Glanders: medicine and veterinary medicine in common pursuit of a contagious disease.

TODAY, GLANDERS is a disease rarely heard of in Western Europe, Britain, and North America; but a hundred years ago the annual total of cases of glanders in the horse, published by the Board of Agriculture, exceeded 2,000,1 and British veterinarians were all too familiar with the disease. Moreover, transmission to man took place with distressing regularity, and the outcome was nearly always fat...

On the Sero-diagnosis of Glanders

NOTWITHSTANDING the discovery of the glanders bacillus the diagnosis of chronic glanders has always been difficult. Later, mallein came into use, but, since the results obtained therewith did not realize all expectations, new serological methods were introduced. Of late two methods were especially used with success, the complement deviation and the agglutination. In the course of this paper the...

Evaluation of recombinant proteins of Burkholderia mallei for serodiagnosis of glanders.

Glanders is a contagious disease caused by the Gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia mallei. The number of equine glanders outbreaks has increased steadily during the last decade. The disease must be reported to the Office International des Epizooties, Paris, France. Glanders serodiagnosis is hampered by the considerable number of false positives and negatives of the internationally prescribed te...

The Histological Lesions of Experimental Glanders

The bacillus of glanders may be so modified in virulence as to produce experimentally lesions differing widely in their histological features. The highly virulent culture causes primary necrosis and disintegration of the tissue followed by the invasion of the injured area by polymorphonuclear leucocytes. The bacilli of moderate virulence give rise to a primary lesion of an acute inflammatory na...

Glanders: an overview of infection in humans

Glanders is a highly contagious and often fatal zoonotic disease, primarily of solipds. In the developed world, glanders has been eradicated. However, prior use of B. mallei as a biological weapon and its high mortality in inhalation animal studies has affirmed B. mallei as a biodefense concern. This threat requires the development of new glanders medical countermeasures (MCMs), as there is a l...

Effect of incubation temperature on the diagnostic sensitivity of the glanders complement fixation test.

The complement fixation test (CFT) is the only serological test prescribed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) for the diagnosis of glanders in international trading of equids. However, false-positive reactions have caused financial losses to the animal owners in the past, and false-negative tests have resulted in the introduction of glanders into healthy equine populations in pre...
