Biodegradability assessments of organic substances and polymers.

چکیده
The biodegradation of organic substances is a natural yet poorly understood process. Given that biodegradation assessments form an integral part of chemical regulations to assess the persistent of substances this lack of knowledge needs to be addressed. Official references define the biodegradation process as "The biologically mediated degradation or transformation of chemicals usually carried out by microorganisms" (ECHA, 2012). The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) expand this definition to include the breakdown of a substance in vitro or in vivo as catalysed by enzymes (IUPAC, 1993).

The value of biodegradation screening test results for predicting the elimination of chemicals' organic carbon in waste water treatment plants.
Based on the test results of a large number of chemical substances, the comparability of different biodegradation test methods was assessed in terms of passing or failing threshold values commonly used for the biodegradability characterisation of chemicals. The comparison revealed a high consistency of the ready biodegradability evaluations in OECD 301 tests regardless of the analytical paramet...
متن کاملBio-Based Polymers with Potential for Biodegradability
A variety of renewable starting materials, such as sugars and polysaccharides, vegetable oils, lignin, pine resin derivatives, and proteins, have so far been investigated for the preparation of bio-based polymers. Among the various sources of bio-based feedstock, vegetable oils are one of the most widely used starting materials in the polymer industry due to their easy availability, low toxicit...
متن کاملStudy on Trend of Biodegradability of Phenolic Compounds During Photo-Fenton Advanced Oxidation Process
Phenolic acids constitute a major group of pollutants which are recalcitrant to common biological treatment. In this study synthetic wastewater containing a mixture of p-coumaric and p-hydroxybenzoic acids was evaluated for photo-Fenton pretreatment. The changes in biodegradability (ratio of biochemical oxygen demand to total organic carbon (TOC)) and mineralization (TOC removal) were monitored...
متن کاملOrganic halogens in the environment: studies of environmental biodegradability and human exposure.
Organic halogens from chlorobleaching of kraft pulp were not as biorecalcitrant as has been assumed. Fifty percent were removed during biotreatment of wastewater, and 50% of the remaining organohalogens faded in fresh water ecosystems in 200 to 400 days. Molecular size seemed not to hinder biodegradation up to sizes of approximately 2000 daltons. Anoxic biodegradation was of prime importance fo...
متن کاملThermoanalytical study of praziquantel-loaded PLGA nanoparticles
Polymeric nanoparticles have received great attention as potential controlled drug delivery systems. Biodegradable polymers has been extensively used in the development of these drug carriers, and the polyesters such as polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid and their copolymers as poly-lactide-co-glycolide are the most used, considering its biocompatibility and biodegradability. Thermal analysis t...
